Andrew Corporation Provides Equipment and Engineering for Taiwan High Speed Rail's TETRA Digital Communications Project

Posted on: Tuesday, 24 June 2003, 06:00 CDT

ORLAND PARK, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 24, 2003--

world's first TETRA contract for the high speed rail industry

Andrew Corporation (NASDAQ:ANDW) is supplying Motorola (NYSE:MOT) with design services, RADIAX (R)radiating cables, HELIAX(R) coaxial cables, antennas, fiber optic transceiver equipment, amplifiers, and network management software for deployment in Motorola's TETRA (TErrestrial Trunked RAdio) digital communications system for the Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation.

Taiwan's high-speed electric rail link will run between the capital Taipei in the north and the southern city of Kaohsiung - a distance of 345 kilometers that normally takes up to ten hours to drive. The high-speed train will travel this distance in 90 minutes. The new communications system will provide digital communications for the entire 345-kilometer track, including the 48 kilometers of tunnels, 10 new train stations and depots, and the high-speed trains themselves -- which will travel at speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour. The Taiwan High Speed Rail project is the world's first TETRA contract for the high-speed rail industry. The project broke ground in May 2000 and is scheduled for completion in 2005.

Under the contract, Andrew will provide specially designed tuned RADIAX radiating cable optimized for both the TETRA frequency band and polarization of the trainborne antenna. The cable is manufactured to meet the stringent fire retardancy and RF cable performance required by Motorola for this project. Andrew will also supply EOCell(TM) long haul fiber optic transceiver equipment to efficiently transport the system's wideband RF signals over optical fiber. The EOCell system will convert RF signals to fiber optic signals for long distance transmission and then convert them back to RF signals at the various remote locations along the track. Andrew EOCell systems are already successfully deployed in communications systems for the Metropolitan Atlanta Railway Transport Authority (MARTA) and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transport Authority (SEPTA) in the USA.

"Andrew's ability to manufacture radiating cable according to our strict performance and fire retardant requirement, was a major factor in our decision to award them this key design and equipment contract," said Quek Leon-Choon, Director of System Integration for Motorola's Commercial, Government and Industrial Solutions Sector (CGISS.)

Motorola's TETRA system will address all of Taiwan High Speed Rail's operational and functional requirements - providing seamless voice and data services; enabling Taiwan High Speed Rail to benefit from enhanced communication reliability and clarity; resulting in better control and management of its daily operations.
