New Media Interface Products Offer High-Performance, Low-Cost Standard Definition-Only Replacement Solutions for Competing Legacy SD Products
Mindspeed Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:MSPD), a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions for network infrastructure applications, today extended its broadcast video product suite with a family of standard-definition (SD)-only physical media-interface devices. Mindspeed's new cable driver, equalizer and reclocker offer SD infrastructure equipment customers a high-performance, low-cost replacement solution for competing legacy products.
The new products complement Mindspeed's family of HD/SD products by offering customers a choice of HD/SD or SD-only devices, allowing greater flexibility in designing systems such as routing switchers, distribution amplifiers, and large production switchers as well as, other broadcast video equipment. Today, Mindspeed also introduced a family of physical media-interface devices in low-power MLF/QFN packaging for broadcast video serial transport applications (see accompanying press release).
Mindspeed's new SD-only broadcast-video media-interface products include the single-channel M21202 video cable driver, M21204 video cable equalizer and the M21205 video reclocker, each supporting SD applications from 143Mbps to 540Mbps data rates. The products offer pin-for-pin electrical and functional compatibility with competing legacy solutions so that they can be used as drop-in replacements while offering superior performance at a fraction of the power.
Technical Details
Mindspeed's family of single-channel physical media-interface products deliver improved system-level flexibility and design margins along with a wider operating range (-10 degree C to +85 degree C) and an improved price/performance ratio compared to competing legacy products.
M21202 SD Video Cable Driver: The M21202 surpasses industry-standard device output return loss (ORL) specifications to provide system developers with added design and manufacturing margins. It is a high-speed, low-power, low-jitter cable driver designed to drive SD-only serial digital video data through 75 ohm coaxial cable typically used in Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) and DVB-ASI video applications. Compared to competing devices, it reduces power dissipation by 30 percent to 55 percent using flexible power supply options and has reduced output jitter with improved ORL and rise/fall times.
M21204 SD Video Cable Equalizer: The M21204 increases the maximum transmission distance of serial digital interface (SDI) and digital video broadcast-asynchronous serial interface (DVB-ASI) video signals across commonly used bandwidth-limiting 75 ohm co-axial cable. Additionally, it reduces power dissipation through the use of flexible power supply voltage operation. The M21204 also improves input return loss (IRL) performance with existing matching networks for additional headroom and manufacturing margins.
M21205 SD Video Reclocker: The M21205 clock-and-data-recovery (CDR) reclocker solution is designed to remove both random and inter-symbol interference (ISI) jitter from the retimed data and provide a retimed data stream compliant to SMPTE and DVB-ASI serial video digital data input. The M21205 reduces power dissipation approximately 50 percent (at 3.3V supply) when compared to competing devices with further reductions possible through lower supply operation and advanced features such as a selectable reduced output swing mode.
Pricing and Availability
Production samples are available now with volumes ramping this quarter. In OEM quantities the M21202 single-channel SD video cable driver is $4.50, the M21204 single-channel SD video cable equalizer is $13.00, and the M21205 single-channel SD video reclocker is $13.00.
