Automatically detects and removes Winny program files from PCs connected to a corporate network
Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ, NASDAQ: IIJI; TSE Mothers: 3774), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, and Net Care, Inc.(*1), IIJ's 52.5% owned subsidiary, today announced the addition of a new feature on the IIJ Quarantine Network Solution Type B service, which will enable it to automatically detect and remove the Winny file-sharing program. The new feature will be available starting April 27, 2006.
IIJ Quarantine Network Solution creates a secure internal local area network (LAN) environment by automatically detecting PCs with security weaknesses and isolating them from the network. In recent years there have been many instances in which personal or confidential information has been leaked from public institutions and private companies, and these leaks have been traced to PCs infected with viruses spread via the Winny program. For customers that prohibit the use of Winny files on their corporate network as part of their privacy policy, the IIJ Group has added a new feature to automatically detect and remove the Winny file-sharing program with the IIJ Quarantine Network Solution Type B service(*2).
With this new feature, the IIJ Quarantine Network Solution automatically checks for the existence of Winny program files as part of its regular assessment of the security level of PCs connected to a company network. If a Winny process is running, the process is stopped, and the Winny program files are deleted from the PC. The new feature can detect 82 versions of Winny, including various incarnations, and covers almost all known versions that make up the Winny network.
The IIJ Group will continue to provide innovative management solutions to improve network security for our customers.
(*1) Net Care's headquarters is Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo and its President and CEO is Koichi Suzuki
(*2) Quarantine Solution Type B uses a dedicated quarantine server installed at the customer's premises and quarantine software installed on each PC to provide quarantine services at the customer's premises when using DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, a protocol that automatically assigns IP addresses to computers on the network when they boot up, rather than assigning static IP addresses to each PC).
