Apr. 28--TOKYO -- Toshiba Corp. said Friday its group net profit rose 69.8 percent in the year through March from the previous year to 78.19 billion yen, or 24.32 yen per share, for the fourth consecutive year of growth on the strength of its personal computers and other digital products.
In a consolidated earnings report for fiscal 2005 based on U.S. accounting standards, the electronics giant also said operating profit advanced 55.4 percent to 240.61 billion yen and pretax profit was up 60.2 percent to 178.18 billion yen on sales of 6.34 trillion yen, up 8.7 percent.
Toshiba will pay a per-share dividend of 6.50 yen for the year, including an interim dividend of 3.00 yen. The full-year sum compares with the previous year's 5.00 yen.
All business segments posted healthy business results, recording year-on-year increases in sales and operating profit, Toshiba said.
The core digital product business staged a 14 percent growth in its sales to 2,536.5 billion yen. The result came mainly from strong PC sales overseas, especially in the United States and Europe.
Toshiba's overall PC sales rose 12 percent to 852.7 billion yen although PC-related operating profit fell to 3.4 billion yen from 8.1 billion yen, affected by a rise in costs resulting from the yen's depreciation against the U.S. dollar, it said.
Its mobile phone and data-storage device businesses also gained, helping offset the negative impact of foreign exchange fluctuations and a fall in the price of DVD recorders and other digital products.
For the current business year through next March, the company projects a group net profit of 90 billion yen and a pretax profit of 220 billion yen on sales of 6.60 trillion yen.
