Siemens Strengthens SOA Leadership Role By Exposing Key HiPath Enterprise Communication Functions to Developers for Business Process Integrations
Posted on: Monday, 1 May 2006, 09:00 CDT
Siemens Communications Inc. today announced that it is expanding its leadership role in enterprise communications by providing development-friendly, business-focused communication applications across a framework of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) standards and associated Web services interfaces. The Siemens(R) Communications SOA initiative, which began in 2004, is planned to ultimately encompass all key Siemens enterprise innovations and services - including past and future communication solutions.
"Siemens is among the first in the communications industry to expose all its key application functions via SOA and has already proven - with numerous market-tested results - the benefits of SOA for integrating communication components and features directly into business processes," said Mark Straton, senior vice president of Marketing, Siemens Communications Inc.
Siemens' commitment to Communications SOA is helping to pave the way for speedier, more cost-effective and reusable communication software services. Enterprise customers, for example, are utilizing Siemens' SOA-built HiPath(R) OpenScape(TM) Software Developer Kit (SDK), which exposes the underlying functions of the HiPath OpenScape solution's presence-smart features and helps to allow developers to easily embed these features directly into enterprise applications.
Siemens is also working with IBM and other technology leaders such as Microsoft Corp. and SAP AG to develop a Communications SOA framework that reduces the time it takes to integrate communications into workflow processes. The Communications SOA framework helps developers save time and money by not requiring, as with traditional integration approaches, deployments of additional servers to act as translation devices between proprietary protocols and application programming interfaces (APIs).
Other highlights from Siemens' Communications SOA initiative:
-- Siemens has aligned its Communications SOA and software design framework with IBM and SAP to embed its communication software components into IBM's WebSphere and Service Delivery Platform (SDP) and into SAP's Netweaver solution.
-- Using its SOA framework, Siemens HiPath OpenScape collaboration portal and presence features are embedded into IBM, SAP and Microsoft business collaboration systems.
-- Siemens identity and access management features are integrated into SAP solutions.
-- Reusable Siemens Communication SOA components now make up the Media Server and Management tools for the HiPath 8000 native SIP-based IP softswitch.
The Siemens Communications SOA platform and associated Web services interfaces are built on open standards to help maximize the use of reusable communication components with any network or business process. Since the beginning of its Communications SOA initiative, Siemens joined IBM as leading members of the OSGi Alliance (formerly known as the Open Services Gateway Initiative) to help ensure common specifications and technologies.
"With the Communications SOA initiative, Siemens is harnessing the power of the entire IT systems integration community and is able to more quickly recycle the best components directly back into the business process improvement equation," Straton said. "We are putting Siemens call control, presence and security features directly in the hands of architects and change agents."
Additional product options and enhancements resulting from the Siemens Communications SOA initiative will be announced later this year.
