Xelerated and Dune Shorten Time-to-Market With Production Ready Metro Ethernet Switch

Posted on: Tuesday, 2 May 2006, 09:00 CDT

SANTA CLARA and SUNNYVALE, Claifornia, May 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Xelerated and Dune Networks today announced a jointly developed production-ready Metro Ethernet Switch based on Xelerated's X11 network processor, its industry leading Metro Ethernet Application and Dune Networks' FAP20V traffic manager.

The carrier-class Metro Ethernet Switch is designed to provision triple-play-services and enterprise VLANs at the edge of carrier networks where classification, QoS enforcement and individual service bandwidth management are required. Its capability of flexibly supporting large tables, Provider Bridge, IPv4/v6 Routing and MPLS in combination with guaranteed rate access and QoS differentiation makes it an ideal product for PON aggregation, IP-DSLAM aggregation and E-LAN provisioning with VPLS.

"This novel approach addresses the key requirements for Metro Ethernet switches by delivering a production-ready platform with a programmable architecture," says Linley Gwennap, principal analyst at The Linley Group. "The programmable architecture delivers the flexibility needed to support evolving standards and add feature differentiation, while the integrated hardware and software design minimizes the OEM's time-to-market."

The 24xGE+2x10GE switch comes with Xelerated's Metro Ethernet Application and its APIs for easy integration of control plane software, and Dune's FAP20V API for configuration of per-customer QoS. Customers are given access to the complete hardware manufacturing IP and to the software for value-add differentiation. To further minimize time-to-market, software integration is provided for third party control plane stacks. Arrangements have also been put in place for production with a global EMS partner, Sanmina-SCI.

OEMs who are looking for ways of addressing the growing demand for metro Ethernet services can take this low cost solution and bring it to market in record time. Unlike other offerings, the solution has been designed for volume production, with Xelerated and Dune providing OEMs with full access to the manufacturing IP. This allows OEMs to either leverage the EMS arrangement set-up by Xelerated and Dune or use their own manufacturing partners or capabilities. With other models such as ODM solutions, OEMs are unable to feature differentiate and will have to carry the cost of the design work.

"I am excited to present this carrier-class solution based on leading merchant silicon. Together with our partners we deliver a powerful, feature rich Metro Ethernet switch solution that our customers can take to volume production in less than three months," says Johan Börje, CEO of Xelerated. "Customers are already working on making the switch part of their product portfolio and bringing it to production during this year," he concludes.

"The fully programmable X11 device together with the FAP20V per-subscriber programmable scheduler results in a solution that for the first time addresses the full requirements of the Metro Edge" commented Eyal Dagan, Dune Networks' CEO.

The switch is designed with two Xelerated X11 data-flow network processors and two Dune FAP20V traffic managers, connected back-to-back. The 20G full duplex devices, X11 and FAP20V, combine wire-speed performance and programmability that enable system vendors to build carrier-class equipment at a competitive price point. Based on the data-flow network processor, it provides the flexibility needed to enable system vendors to add value by feature differentiation and to adapt as standards evolve giving them a major cost advantage by reducing development time as well as extending time in market.

The Metro Ethernet Switch has redundant power supplies and is available in two different variants regarding GE interface types. The fiber model has 24 SFP and 2 XFP interfaces, and the copper model has 24 RJ45 and 2 XFP interfaces. Either model allows four of the GE ports to be used for either copper or fiber, creating a high degree of flexibility when connecting to other on-site networking equipment or using GE as uplinks. The switch is built with a compact 1U height and 390 mm depth form factor, suitable for use in 19" racks and telecom cabinets such as standard ETSI/ANSI/ATCA racks.

The Metro Ethernet Switch will be on display at Interop 2006 in Las Vegas this week and at the Globalcomm exhibit in June.

Prototypes and hardware design will be available in September and will be ready for volume production in Q4 2006.
