Extreme Networks Delivers Secure InteropNet Event Network By Isolating Thousands of Threats

Posted on: Thursday, 4 May 2006, 09:04 CDT

LAS VEGAS, INTEROP, May 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Powering the backbone of this week's annual networking event, Interop(R) 2006, Extreme Networks, Inc. has successfully delivered a secure converged network resulting in a reliable experience for hundreds of exhibiting vendors and thousands of show attendees.

By monitoring millions of published IP addresses exposed to the Internet, Extreme Networks secured the InteropNet from more than 350,000 unwanted traffic probes. Extreme Networks' secure switching foundation, including its BlackDiamond(R) core switch, the CLEAR-Flow(TM) security rules engine and the Sentriant(TM) Threat Detection appliance, enabled the network to monitor and respond to anomalous behavior in the network core, helping to keep the network highly available.

The InteropNet is built for consistent performance and IP convergence with Extreme Networks' BlackDiamond core switches and Summit(R) 400 edge switches featuring Power over Ethernet (PoE). The InteropNet delivered smooth connectivity for video streams, VoIP phone calls and Internet and traffic on a 10 Gigabit backbone.

"Extreme Networks' Sentriant Threat Detection appliance has kept attack traffic from interrupting performance of the InteropNet resulting in an enhanced networking experience for all attendees," said Suresh Gopalakrishnan, vice president of marketing for Extreme Networks. "The success of the InteropNet showcases how Extreme Networks builds a highly available, secure and converged network with insight and control from our ExtremeXOS operating system."

To further protect the network, Extreme Networks selectively encrypted network traffic between the three Network Operating Centers (NOCs) for the InteropNet using its Sentriant CE150 appliance. This helped prevent attackers from tapping into the traffic between the NOCs. The reliability of the InteropNet was further enhanced with Extreme Networks' Ethernet Automatic Protection Switching (EAPS) capability. With EAPS running on the InteropNet ring, voice and content traffic are protected in the event of a fiber cut or interruption.
