Harris Corporation Wins Expansion Order From Bangladesh Telephone and Telegraph Board (BTTB) to Provide Additional Capacity

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., May 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation , a leading global provider of wireless equipment and services, today announced that its digital microwave radios will play a key role in the network expansion of Bangladesh Telephone and Telegraph Board (BTTB), a leading provider of telecommunication services in Bangladesh. BTTB will build on the Harris MegaStar(R) digital microwave radios it already has in place, tripling the current capacity and positioning BTTB to capitalize on Bangladesh's growing international voice, video and data traffic.
The additional capacity enabled by the Harris digital microwave radios will provide approximately 150 kilometers of coverage and will assist BTTB in avoiding network bottlenecks. With this expansion, BTTB will have the ability to use the network as an alternative to any sudden disruption of its existing optical fiber route.
"By choosing Harris microwave radios for this capacity expansion, BTTB has also increased the amount of bandwidth available to deploy next-generation services," said Roberto Angeles, regional sales director of Asia for Harris' Microwave Communications Division. "These next-generation services encompass the type of value-added features that play a key factor in determining what service provider a customer chooses."
BTTB has selected digital microwave radios from Harris to form a highly flexible microwave backbone that increases the link between the cities of Cox's Bazar and Chittagong from 1:1 to 1:3 capacity to ensure BTTB has approximately 4,000 usable channels. With the modular, plug-in components of MegaStar(R), BTTB is able to easily perform these capacity upgrades.
MegaStar(R) is a high-capacity synchronous digital microwave radio for OC-3 or STM-1 transport. It operates in the 5, 6, 7, 8 and 11 GHz bands, interoperating with standard SONET/SDH multiplexers and ATM switches. The additional flexibility and scalability provided by MegaStar(R), combined with ease of deployment, enables BTTB to add new services and grow its customer base with limited impact on its network infrastructure.
