Tokyo, March 31 (Jiji Press)--The number of subscribers to optical fiber network services in Japan totaled 1,042,776 at the end of February, up 8.5 pct from a month before, topping the one- million mark for the first time ever, the Ministry of Public Management said Wednesday.
The popularity of FTTH, or fiber to the home, services is increasing reflecting falls in the service fees and their higher Internet access speeds compared with those for asymmetric digital subscriber line services, ministry officials said.
The overall number of subscribers to high-speed network services, including FTTH and ADSL services, came to 14,493,012 at the end of February, up 2.9 from a month before, the ministry said.
Of the total, the combined number of DSL and ADSL subscribers grew 2.7 pct to 10,904,236, while subscribers to cable television- based network services increased 1.4 pct to 2,546,000.END
