The Division of Capital Asset Management (DCAM) for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Has Selected FAMIS On Demand -- The ASP for Integrated Workplace Management

Posted on: Monday, 8 May 2006, 18:05 CDT

In May 2006, DCAM decided to transition and expand the use of their Integrated Workplace Management System, FAMIS. The transition was from an internally self-hosted and self-supported model to FAMIS On Demand -- The ASP for Integrated Workplace Management. DCAM also expanded their use of FAMIS by subscribing to the entire FAMIS maintenance and operations suite of software.

FAMIS On Demand manages and supports FAMIS' world-class Integrated Workplace Management System software modules in a centralized IT environment that is accessed via the Internet. It is a service that takes away from the burden of paying for upgrades, patches and routine maintenance while still providing FAMIS in an environment where it can be tailored to an organization's specific needs. This flexibility helps them more efficiently manage the way they do business and increases their return on investment.

In 2001 DCAM chose FAMIS to provide the tools necessary to maintain the buildings and assets for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The key objective was to utilize the functionality inherent in the system to provide the information necessary to make well-informed decisions on capital spending. Over the past 5 years about 50 statewide facilities have been using the system successfully to do just that.

When the system was initially deployed DCAM chose to host and support the platform technology (Oracle and AutoCAD), as well as the capital asset management information system application (FAMIS) at the Commonwealth's data center. Recently DCAM decided that a cost-effective way to streamline the maintenance and support of the system while also increasing the use of FAMIS, both in the breadth of users & depth of functionality, was to transition to the FAMIS On Demand ASP model.

The key impetus for this transition was to provide more state agencies an easy way to access a centralized, content-rich information center where they could quickly obtain all of the building and asset information necessary for them to make well-informed decisions on capital spending. An-Ping Chi, DCAM Program Manager, said "the initial roll out of FAMIS On Demand is anticipated to increase the use of FAMIS by roughly 10 additional facilities within the next 12-months." According to Michael A. Ellis, FAMIS Software, Inc. Founder/CEO, "FAMIS On Demand is the fastest growing segment of our business, and we are very pleased that DCAM, a true innovator in integrated workplace management, has selected us as its service provider."

During the FAMIS On Demand evaluation process Hope K. Davis, DCAM Director, Office of Facilities Maintenance, said, "The multi-organization functionality requirement we have at DCAM mandates that all of the individual agencies ONLY have access to THEIR OWN data, while still providing DCAM with the ability to oversee all of the agencies' data. The fact that FAMIS On Demand provides this capability coupled with the highest level of security was paramount in making this decision." Davis also noted that "FAMIS On Demand will facilitate the expansion of an environment where our state agencies can conduct their business in a consistent and standardized fashion, which will ultimately result in a very cost efficient way of doing business for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts."
