Net Neutrality Central Theme for Keynote at ISPCON Spring 2006; David S. Isenberg to Present State and Fate of Network Neutrality at Critical Pivot Point

The volume of concern from Internet industry and consumer rights groups continues to build around the business and legal implications of network neutrality. This Spring's ISPCON keynote presentation will provide a poignant and timely commentary on the state of the Neutrality issue delivered by luminary David S. Isenberg. Dr. Isenberg will present "Your Neutrality Reality" addressing the current state and fate of network neutrality as the economics of every Internet business are on track to be turned completely upside down.
"This is a critical, far-reaching topic right now and the outcome of the movements we're seeing from the government and the largest ISPs and content providers have the potential to change the entire landscape of the Internet as we know it," said Jon Price, CEO of the Golden Group. "ISPCON is proud to continually offer a venue for industry leaders to converge upon at such crucial times in tech history."
Network neutrality operates under three principles: access, non-discrimination and interconnection. Since the Internet was founded, network neutrality has ensured that all Internet users are able to access the content and applications they choose, regardless of who provides their Internet connection. Because communications monopolies have been reassembled, the power to control what travels over these massive networks wrests in the hands of the monopolies and has become a final battleground for the Internet.
Without network neutrality, it is likely that a tiered model will emerge where the Telco or Cable provider determines what is made accessible to the millions of subscribers and interconnected people or computers utilizing their portion of the Internet along the way. Preferred web sites such as Google, Yahoo! or Amazon.com may run well on one network in return for paying a fee to the carrier while disappearing from another network unless the fee is paid to the carrier or by the subscriber. Internet-based services and applications like VoIP, CRM and webmail will run well for some and others will move slower or be completely blocked. By maintaining preference to certain content providers and controlling access to content and applications, carriers expect to charge additional fees, thus compromising the open basis upon which the Internet was founded.
"A change in network neutrality policies could have long reaching implications for the entire Internet economy." stated David S. Eisenberg. "ISPs, content providers, businesses and consumers alike are all at risk of witnessing the installation of carrier-operated tollbooths at every single street corner of the Internet." Dr. Isenberg is the visionary author of "The Stupid Network" and principal of Isen.com, his presentation will cover salient points and what's ahead for the Internet industry and the entire economy as we face the new reality of neutrality and determine what, if anything can be done.
ISPCON Spring takes place from May 16-17, 2006. Dr. Isenberg's presentation will take place from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 17 at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, MD. For more information please visit www.ispcon.com
