May 7--SkyTel Corp., which is testing high-speed wireless Internet service in Colorado Springs, expanded its service just three months after launching it and eventually plans to expand to the Garden of the Gods area.
SkyTel, a Verizon Communications Inc. subsidiary, began offering wireless Internet service to entire neighborhoods -- each about two square miles -- near Chapel Hills Mall and in downtown Colorado Springs in February. The two areas include about 2,200 homes and 400 businesses, according to the Census Bureau, Downtown Partnership and mall records.
Soon after Jackson, Miss.-based SkyTel turned on its 35 transmitters on streetlight poles in downtown and near the mall, the company added three more access points near Chapel Hills to increase its coverage, SkyTel President Bruce Deer said.
"We are pleased with it and were willing to add coverage in those areas right off in the beginning because we did see good demand," Deer said.
Wi-Fi subscriptions for small-to-medium-size businesses increased in April. The company expects additional increases as companies' current Internet service contracts expire.
Hourly subscriptions are on the rise as warmer weather in Colorado Springs entices more people to sit outside with their laptops.
Although it is too early to say when, the company plans to target large businesses along the Garden of the Gods Road corridor as a third coverage area.
It also may offer wireless service to local school districts, colleges, universities and technical schools.
SkyTel's residential service costs $24.99 a month for home users, about $18 a month less than Adelphia Communications Corp.'s cable Internet service and about $30 a month less than Qwest Communications International Inc.'s digital subscriber line -- or DSL -- service. Adelphia and Qwest are now offering lower promotional rates for up to 12 months.
