May 10--U.S. 27 in part of Broward and southern Palm Beach counties was closed this morning after fog and smoke from brush fires reduced visibility for motorists to virtually zero.
The National Weather Service issued a dense fog alert until 8 a.m. Wednesday for an area bounded roughly by Interstate 75 on the south, South Bay in Palm Beach County on the north and west along Alligator Alley through much of western Broward.
U.S. 27 was closed near the Broward-Palm Beach County border to South Bay around 6 a.m., and that could be extended south to I-75, officials said.
Officials recommend that motorists slow down and pull off on the shoulder of the road if conditions get too bad to drive. Motorists should not stop on the road itself.
