ARTiSAN Studio Chosen By Serco to Develop and Maintain Advanced Traffic Management System
Posted on: Wednesday, 10 May 2006, 09:09 CDT
CHELTENHAM, England, May 10 /PRNewswire/ -- ARTiSAN Software Tools, a global leader for UML 2.0 and SysML-based real-time systems and software modeling tools, has announced that Serco Integrated Transport has chosen ARTiSAN Studio as the system modeling environment to create a new control system the company has been contracted to develop and maintain for an advanced traffic management project.
"What appealed to us the most about ARTiSAN Studio is its concurrent modeling environment that allowed our analysts to work collaboratively to quickly build the System Model," said Chris Bax, Senior Project Manager.
The system is being designed to make the best possible use of existing road space and help control congestion. It aims to increase the reliability of journey times, provide an improved travel environment and improve the quality and availability of information to motorists.
Real time data will be collected by equipment such as monitoring loops within the road surface and CCTV cameras, which constantly monitor road and traffic conditions and feed into a control system. The system will then automatically implement and control overhead lane-specific signals and variable message signs to control road traffic through variable speed limits and designate lane availability. This will include the use of the hard shoulder during an incident or heavily congested conditions. The system will generate a historical log of activities for later analysis and review.
The control system has been future-proofed to allow for expansion, both in terms of additional functionality such as access management, and full-scale national deployment, dependent upon requirements.
"Serco's traffic management project adds to our rapidly expanding transportation client portfolio which covers automotive electronics, railway signaling and control, and now road traffic management," said Jeremy Goulding, President and CEO of ARTiSAN Software Tools. "Our growing reputation and success in the transportation market is due, by and large, to our extensive commitment to, and experience of, safety critical systems development."
