May 10--A dense fog advisory for South Florida was lifted this morning after fog and smoke from brush fires reduced visibility for motorists to virtually zero along U.S. 27 and Alligator Alley.
The National Weather Service lifted the advisory at 8 a.m.
Starting in the pre-dawn hours, visibility was reduced to virtually zero in parts of an area bounded roughly by Interstate 75 on the south, South Bay in Palm Beach County on the north and west along Alligator Alley through much of western Broward.
U.S. 27 was closed for a time in the early morning near the Broward-Palm Beach County border to South Bay, officials said. The Florida Highway Patrol said that the road had reopened by 8:30 a.m.
Poor driving conditions were also prevalent farther to the east in South Florida as the smoke and fog drifted eastward.
No serious accidents were reported dur to the smoke and fog. Officials recommend that motorists slow down and pull off on the shoulder of the road if conditions get too bad to drive. Motorists should not stop on the road itself.
