CollabNet, the leading provider of on-demand distributed software development solutions, today announced the Sun Grid Developer Community, created by Sun Microsystems, has selected CollabNet as its enabling technology. Launching at JavaOne in San Francisco this week, the Sun Grid Developer Community (https://www.developer.network.com/) is the first computing utility grid available via the Internet. With Sun Grid, CollabNet now powers seven Sun community development projects, including NetBeans.org, java.net and OpenOffice.org. CollabNet enables globally distributed development teams in both open source communities and enterprises to easily and effectively collaborate via the web in order to drive software innovation.
Sun Grid's success will depend upon the quality of applications written for its grid infrastructure. CollabNet will enable Sun Grid contributors worldwide to collaboratively build and deploy high-quality, "grid-ready" applications. Through the Sun Grid Community site, developers can work together on projects, share best practices, and access tools, documentation and resources to optimize applications for the grid. By powering the grid community, CollabNet is helping Sun create a robust ecosystem of independent service vendors on its computing utility.
"Because of CollabNet's proven track record in providing value to Sun's developer communities, it was an easy decision when it came time to launching the Sun Grid Developer Community," said Mike Bellissimo, senior director of Developer Grid Services. "CollabNet allows us to create effective global software development processes and as a result, they are helping us drive software innovation and our on-demand vision for computing."
CollabNet Community Edition will allow Sun to coordinate and cultivate a network of active developers for Sun Grid with a suite of on-demand collaborative development tools and management services. The solution increases developer efficiency and productivity by providing a universal development environment that does not force users to conform to rigid, tool-imposed processes, but rather allows them to take advantage of their individual skill sets and personalized development practices. CollabNet Community Edition currently has more than 700,000 Sun community users worldwide and allows any developer community to easily scale to hundreds of thousands of global participants. CollabNet also allows customers to easily customize the content and branding of the solution to the requirements of a particular community.
"We are ecstatic about continuing our relationship with Sun and are committed to helping them drive even greater software innovation and team efficiency," said Martin Doettling, VP of worldwide marketing at CollabNet. "The unprecedented development environment offered by Sun Grid provides developers with both backward and forward compatibility through one the leading operating systems on the market, Solaris 10. The global developers contributing to Sun's communities have come to rely on CollabNet to make their collaboration efforts effective and rewarding. By leveraging the best collaborative practices from open source and using the on-demand model to deliver a cost-effective, high-value solution, we are helping teams and companies drive software innovation regardless of geographic boundaries."
