SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- StarNet Communications Corp., a leading publisher of Windows-to-UNIX/Linux connectivity software, announced the release of Desktop-X and Desktop-X/LE, two low-cost X Windows application display utilities designed specifically for Microsoft's "Windows Services for UNIX (SFU) 3.5" platform of interoperability solutions. Desktop-X and Desktop-X/LE will be distributed through Interop Systems Inc. of Woodinville, WA (http://www.interopsystems.com/).
The two utilities provide a graphical user interface to display X Windows applications ported under the Interix subsystem technology, which is included in Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX 3.5. Priced in the $100 range, Desktop-X and Desktop-X/LE feature a small footprint of less than 10MB and are based on StarNet's latest X server technology including support for high-level OpenGL-based graphics programs.
Desktop-X/LE is designed to only display X Windows applications running locally on the Windows machine. Desktop-X, in addition, also allows the user to connect over a LAN to X-Windows applications running on a remote UNIX or Linux server or on another Windows system running SFU 3.5.
StarNet and Interop Systems are responding to customer demand for simplicity, low footprint and affordable price, said Bill Miller, president of Interop Systems. "Microsoft's Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 offers the means to easily interoperate between platforms. With Desktop-X, customers can economically rehost their legacy UNIX applications on the Microsoft Windows platform. We welcome the opportunity to bring Desktop-X to our SFU customer base."
Combined with the freely distributed SFU 3.5, the Desktop-X utilities offer compelling advantages over Cygwin for deploying legacy X Windows applications on the Windows desktop. SFU 3.5 includes the same programs and development tools that Cygwin includes such as; make, yacc, lex, nm, strip, gcc, g++, g77, gdb, perl, awk, grep, sed, tar, apache, etc. Desktop-X as well as additional development tools such as cvs, openssh, openssl, gmake, bzip, bash, etc. are available for download from the Interop Systems website at http://www.interopsystems.com/
SFU 3.5 also includes some things that Cygwin does not include, such as NFS server and client and stable fork and exec performance. SFU 3.5 and the Desktop-X utilities also enjoy the full corporate support of Microsoft and StarNet respectively, making this a highly adoptable solution in corporate and government enterprises.
"Together with the new Desktop-X utilities, SFU 3.5 offers a compelling advantage over Cygwin," added Paul Swart, StarNet Vice President of Sales & Marketing. "SFU 3.5 and Desktop-X clearly demonstrate that the commercial sector can deliver well-supported solutions that offer superior value, features and performance over open source alternatives."
