MontaVista Software Inc., the leading embedded Linux provider for the telecommunications, mobile and embedded markets, today announced it supports more than 200 Linux Support Packages (LSP) from leading companies worldwide. MontaVista LSP support covers semiconductor and board manufacturers including AMD, AMCC, Freescale Semiconductor, Intel, Motorola, NEC, TI and many others. MontaVista's broad hardware support puts it in a class of its own with more than five times as many boards supported under Linux as its closest competitors.
MontaVista Software is unique in the industry, providing support for more than seven architectures, 30 processor variants, and more than 200 modern board-level platforms. In fact, additional platforms and boards are being added constantly. Through close relationships with all of the major silicon and board vendors, MontaVista is able to provide the most extensive hardware support available on a common source base.
MontaVista also supports 50 boards running on its fifth-generation Linux platform based on the 2.6 kernel. As a fifth-generation release, MontaVista Software has the only Linux in the market that is proven in terms of quality, strict feature requirements and advanced technologies.
"Each generation of MontaVista Linux has seen us provide enhanced features and functionality that our customers and the market are requiring," said Jim Ready, CEO, MontaVista Software. "With over seven years of experience deploying Linux systems, our fifth-generation product is leaps and bounds above the competition in terms of stability and functionality. With thousands of customers running MontaVista Linux on millions of devices, MontaVista Linux is the world's most widely deployed commercial Linux available today."
"We have forged a strong relationship with MontaVista to bring embedded Linux to carrier-grade Sun Netra and ATCA-based platforms that give customers more value and cost savings," said Raju Penumatcha, vice president, Netra Systems and Networking, Sun Microsystems. "Through our relationship with MontaVista, we have offered more choice to our network equipment provider (NEP) customers with accelerated time-to-market."
"Linux OS is oxygen for the world of embedded communications -- an essential enabler for a wide range of applications, from wireless and wireline communications to industrial control to the digital home," said Lynelle McKay, vice president and general manager of Freescale's Digital Systems Division. "MontaVista Linux is a powerful complement to Freescale's processor platforms based on PowerPC(R) cores. The combined solutions drive down cost, accelerate time-to-market and spur innovation for customers worldwide."
"Embedded Linux is emerging as the dominant platform for building high-availability network infrastructure products, and we are committed to offering our telecom equipment OEM customers the finest carrier-grade Linux solutions," said Scott McCowan, president of Artesyn Communication Products. "Our open architecture ATCA, AdvancedMC, and MicroTCA blades, when equipped with MontaVista's carrier-grade Linux, provide an excellent platform for deploying a broad range of telecom infrastructure applications."
Continued Momentum
Last month, MontaVista announced they joined forces with Enea to create the industry's most comprehensive, highly integrated software platform for distributed telecom applications. The new high-availability, fault-tolerant platform, known as the Network Application Services Platform (NASP), provides a telecom-in-a-box solution for developing, deploying and managing distributed telecom applications spanning multiple operating systems, CPUs, DSPs, interconnects, and shelf architectures.
The NASP combines MontaVista's Linux operating system products (Carrier Grade Edition or Professional Edition) with Enea's high-availability Element middleware, Polyhedra fault-tolerant database, and Eclipse-based development tools. The NASP is also available with Enea's OSE and OSEck RTOSes for distributed telecom infrastructure environments that require a heterogeneous OS solution. The NASP utilizes Enea's recently announced LINX open source interprocess communications (IPC) services to facilitate transparent, high-performance communications between NASP components and applications across multiple OS and CPU/DSP boundaries.
The MontaVista Edge
Leading companies worldwide have adopted the MontaVista Linux family of products. In fact, hundreds of millions of devices have shipped running MontaVista Linux Professional Edition, Carrier Grade Edition (CGE) and Mobilinux. Our open source and Linux experience, our reputation for innovation, and our proven technology are just a few reasons for selecting MontaVista Software.
