Sun Taps Wireless Market Growth; Packages Custom Services for Network Equipment Providers to Provide Them a Competitive Edge
Posted on: Monday, 22 March 2004, 06:00 CST
ATLANTA, CTIA WIRELESS 2004, March 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Targeting the $29 billion (Source: IDC) network equipment provider (NEP) market, Sun Microsystems announced it is expanding its services offerings by launching the NEP Lifecycle Services Program(SM). NEPs are the prime providers of network equipment for wireless carriers. The top 10 NEPs, representing more than 90 percent of the telecommunications network equipment market, currently offer solutions based on Sun's network computing platform.
"Our goal is to continuously increase the strategic value that Sun brings to our valued Network Equipment Provider partners. This announcement does exactly this and puts Sun at an even higher strategic level by improving the business processes that matter most to these partners," said Marge Breya, senior vice president, marketing, Sun Microsystems."
Unlike competitor's offerings, the new NEP Lifecycle Services Program helps NEPs focus less on day-to-day technology and more on product development. NEPs can reduce their product development, integration and supply chain costs, minimize hardware development expense while increasing inventory turnover, ultimately delivering highly customized products to their end user.
The new NEP Lifecycle Services includes:
-- Development Services -- helps augment the NEP's product development
team, including the ability to co-develop, engineer and design
products, outfit and manage labs and provide on-site engineering
expertise. This can help NEPs reduce product development costs,
typically a high priority for NEPs.
-- Industry Certification Services -- helps NEPs comply with regulatory
and certification requirements such as NEBS and ETSI. This can help
NEPs focus on product development.
-- Sun Customer Ready Systems (CRS)-- offers NEPs custom integration of
Sun and third-party products and delivers them directly to customers
pre-tested and certified. Using the Sun CRS program, customers have
reduced their inventory cycle times, eliminated unnecessary shipping
costs and experienced 80 percent fewer early-life system issues during
deployment. Sun builds and certifies the solutions inside Sun's own
factories.
-- Go-to-Market Services -- provides customized marketing packages
including media activities, trade show coordination, channel
management, account planning and joint sales activities.
-- Support Services -- provides end-to-end Product Lifecycle Management
including warranty, field services, customer support, parts inventory
and traceability, repair, re-manufacturing and replacement services.
Sun, in conjunction with systems integrators for the telecommunications industry GNP, Pinnacle Data Systems and Continuous Computing Corporation delivers this comprehensive set of service offerings that can be combined into one package or used as much or as little as needed to meet the NEP's requirements.
