T-Com Selects Lucent Technologies to Further Expand Capacity on Its Optical Transport Network to Meet Increased Data Demand

Posted on: Wednesday, 17 March 2004, 06:00 CST

HANNOVER, Germany, March 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- T-Com, the fixed line business unit of Deutsche Telekom, has selected Lucent Technologies to upgrade its optical transport network to meet increased data demand from the expansion of Deutsche Telekom's nationwide broadband access business.

Under the terms of the two-year contract, potentially worth a few hundreds of millions of dollars, Lucent will supply leading-edge optical networking technology to help T-Com expand its network to meet its business and residential customers' growing bandwidth demand for data applications. Over the past several years, Lucent and T-Com have worked together to expand the network and offer new value-added services to customers, such as Ethernet over optical services, announced at CeBIT 2003 and based on Lucent's WaveStar(R) TransLAN(TM) technology. This agreement confirms Lucent as the principle supplier of optical networking technology for T-Com's worldwide transmission network.

"Deutsche Telekom is one of Lucent's most important customers in Europe and also one of the most innovative, as their early introduction of new technology shows," said Dave Poticny, president of Lucent Technologies Europe. "We are pleased that by delivering new technology, we have created the prerequisites for T-Com to offer companies attractive new services, such as Gigabit Ethernet, fully transparent SDH services or storage services."

Used together, Lucent's optical solutions will help T-Com reduce network complexity and operating expenses, through lowering the cost of deploying and supporting services. This contract extension introduces a new product in the access part of the transport network, the Metropolis(R) AMS, a compact access multiplexer. In the metro network, scalability and density improvements are being introduced on the Metropolis ADM platform. In the Metro Core and Backbone network, 40 gigabit (40G) optical upgrades and other capacity- enhancing modules on Lucent's LambdaUnite(R) MultiService Switch will be added. Additionally, Lucent TransLAN(TM) Gigabit Ethernet cards are being introduced throughout all network layers.

As part of the continuing network upgrade, Lucent Worldwide Services (LWS) engineers and T-Com are swapping out older optical switches for the LambdaUnite(R) MultiService Switch. In December 2003, Lucent and T-Com engineers switched 10,000 transmission paths to the more powerful LambdaUnite(R) network node in T-Com's Networking Center in Cologne. LWS developed a software tool to support its engineers at the T-Com site that allowed them to automatically swap all paths in less than three days, rather than the 5000 hours it usually takes to complete a project of this size. The actual hardware swap was completed in just two hours.

The Lucent Bell Labs development team in Nuremberg, Germany, has played an important role in developing Lucent's optical products, specifically TransLAN(TM) technology and the SDH product family. Lucent's Nuremberg facility has company-wide responsibility for the SDH product family, including development, prototype construction, testing, and marketing and technical support.

Technical information

Developed by Bell Labs, the LambdaUnite(R) MSS enables T-Com to use their existing optical equipment while cost-effectively migrating from existing TDM (time-division multiplexed) networks to data-aware packet networks. The compact size and low energy requirements of LambdaUnite(R) MSS means operators can make significant cost savings compared to traditional systems.

This flexible single-shelf system was recently optimized for smaller metro applications, enabling T-Com to support in-service upgrades from 160G to 320G, as well as to 640G using 40G port interface upgrades, allowing the system to grow when network capacity increases. Mesh restoration capabilities were also added to help carriers migrate to new mesh-based networks, while at the same time, leveraging traditional restoration architectures.

The Lucent Metropolis(R) AMS is a compact multiplexer for metropolitan and access networks and is used for low-cost Ethernet connections between company LANs. It has a bandwidth of up to 150 Mbit/s (STM-1) that can be assigned flexibly to T-Com's various customers.

Lucent will also provide Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) functionality through its WaveStar(R) TransLan(TM) cards that upgrade SDH multiplexers with GigE interfaces and facilitate the provisioning of Ethernet services to corporate customers, forming the technical base for Ethernet services that T-Com offers its customers.

All optical network elements are integrated into Lucent's OneVision(R) multi-vendor network management solution, which is a suite of highly integrated software products specifically packaged for DT to manage its multi- vendor optical network (see related release issued today: "Lucent Technologies further extends multi-vendor optical network management solution at Deutsche Telekom").

Lucent Worldwide Services will continue to provide installation and engineering support.
