1st transcontinental optical fiber cable inaugurated in Ulan Bator
ULAN BATOR, April 14 (Xinhua) -- The first terrestrial optical fiber cable connecting Moscow and Beijing via Ulan Bator was inaugurated in downtown Ulan Bator on Wednesday.
As the first of its kind, the cable greatly cuts down the delay time for signal transmission compared with submarine cable and satellite.
Liu Yunjie, who represented China Unicom at the inauguration, said the cable gives customers in China, Mongolia, Russia, and even other Asian countries a choice to use the most suitable network solution and service to better satisfy their needs.
Liu also pointed out that the terrestrial fiber network will create a valuable opportunity to promote cooperation between Asia and Europe in telecommunications, industry, finance and other fields.
The construction of the network began in 2003 and was carried out jointly by China Unicom, Russia TransTelecom and Mongolia Railway.
