Alcatel Takes Center Stage in Broadband Entertainment With Its Industry Leading Open Media Suite

DALLAS, April 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Alcatel today introduced, to the broadband entertainment marketplace, its fully integrated Open Media Suite, the industry leading middleware solution for delivery of rich media in a triple play service mix (voice, data, video). Alcatel's solution delivers the software products, system integration capabilities and professional services to help service providers grow their business and stay ahead of the competition by bringing these enriched broadband services to residential customers worldwide.
Fuelled by the rapid growth in demand for new, high value broadband services and the need to offer triple play capabilities, telecommunications service providers are incorporating entertainment services into their broadband portfolios. With the largest accumulated customer base in IP (Internet Protocol) TV, and a worldwide presence, Alcatel helps them to simplify this complex business.
Using Alcatel's Open Media Suite, service providers unlock new revenue potential by delivering end-to-end customized broadband entertainment solutions through the creation, delivery, provision and management of vast numbers of channels for broadcast TV, video on demand, personal video recording, electronic program guides, Web browsing and e-mail.
"With TV over DSL it is critical that a supplier not only deliver a strong product, but it must also be backed by services and systems integration. Alcatel is in a position to do that, and to help service providers face the challenges they encounter when executing their broadband service strategies," said Steve Hawley of Advanced Media Strategies.
"One of the key success factors for Alcatel's Open Media Suite will be our ability to deliver stable, off-the-shelf solutions that run in a real commercial environment. Our approach spans the delivery of a software platform to the supply of a turnkey system that is fully integrated with our customers' network and OSS/BSS systems," said Alan Mottram, president of Alcatel's fixed solutions activities. "With the OMS, we reinforce our role as a new kind of partner and integrator for service providers worldwide."
The Alcatel Open Media Suite is an end-to-end portfolio of products and professional services, encompassing user interface customization, integration with third-party equipment such as set top boxes and digital video head ends, as well as facilitating negotiations with content owners and suppliers. The portfolio includes the Alcatel 5950 Open Media Platform, the 5950 Open Media Applications and the Alcatel 5959 Open Media Content Management and Delivery system, including the 5959 Open Video Server. The openness and flexibility of these products as well as the software development kits ensure that customers and third parties can easily develop new applications. The Open Media Suite is designed to allow service providers to fully profit from the investment in their broadband access networks. With its flexible non-proprietary architecture, advances in technology can be adopted quickly, thus increasing network efficiency and overall profitability.
