May 24--"Elegant Soul," a biography about the late, great jazz pianist and Boise resident Gene Harris won a silver medal at ForeWord magazine's 2005 Book of the Year Awards.
The trade publication recognizes excellence in a variety of categories of books published by independent and university presses.
The book was honored Friday at a special ceremony at Book Expo America in Washington, D.C.
Written by Harris' widow, Janie, and Boise State University associate director of communications Bob Evancho, "Elegant Soul: The Life and Music of Gene Harris" (Caxton Press, $24.95) took second place in the music category. The gold medal went to "Salsa Talks," by Mary Kent.
Harris lived in Boise the past 23 years of his life, settling here when he went into semi-retirement in the 1970s. Janie Harris worked as his manager and constant companion during his travels. He died of kidney failure caused by diabetes in January 2000.
Janie Harris now plays host on the Boise State radio program "Jazz Straight Ahead."
