AT&T Supports the New York Public Service Commission's Notice on Local Telephone Service

Posted on: Thursday, 1 April 2004, 06:00 CST

NEW YORK, April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Attribute to Mike Morrissey, Vice President, Law and Government Affairs, AT&T:

"AT&T strongly applauds the New York Public Service Commission in making it clear that competition will be preserved among companies offering local service in the state. A notice from the PSC delivered on Monday clearly advocates the sustaining of the current competitive landscape.

"It's important to note that the PSC is merely seeking comment on a wide variety of issues and has not ordered any changes in wholesale Unbundled Network Element (UNE) prices.

"It's also important to note that the PSC, in its notice, affirms the regulatory "safety net" it had already established for telecommunications companies in New York State, and that its approach does not supercede the rights and responsibilities of the companies under their existing contracts. While AT&T gladly welcomes that safety net, we believe that there is no current need to rely upon it. Verizon's obligation to continue to provide access to its facilities under its agreement with AT&T is clear.

"We believe that existing rules and wholesale rates levied to companies like AT&T, that use Verizon's local network, are valid and help shape a positive, competitive climate in a state that thrives on competition. Along those lines, we look forward to working with the PSC as it examines all state and federal directives and the implications of those directives."
