AT&T Wireless Employees in Paramus Roll Up Their Sleeves to Support Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup(TM)

Posted on: Thursday, 22 April 2004, 06:00 CDT

PARAMUS, N.J., April 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AT&T Wireless is joining the efforts of 2.3 million volunteers who are cleaning, beautifying and improving communities nationwide during Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup(TM), March 1 - May 31, the nation's largest annual community improvement program. As part of its national sponsorship of the Great American Cleanup, more than 600 AT&T Wireless employees in twelve cities will tackle eyesores and build a sense of pride and ownership of their local community environments on April 22. The locations are Atlanta; Boston; Chicago; Cleveland; Detroit; Houston; Los Angeles, Sacramento and Bakersfield, CA; Paramus, NJ; Seattle, and Washington, DC.

In Paramus, New Jersey, AT&T Wireless employees will help to clear a wooded area near the Paramus High School that will eventually be turned into an environmental center for the students. The local activities are part of an estimated 30,000 Great American Cleanup activities that are happening this spring from coast-to-coast in more than 14,000 communities.

"We are honored to be the first wireless carrier to partner with Keep America Beautiful to help protect our environment," said Tom Devito, AT&T Wireless, NY/NJ Vice President. "Our employees are excited about participating in Great American Cleanup activities across the country as our contribution to Earth Day and National Volunteer Week."

Since 1985, national nonprofit Keep America Beautiful(R) has been leading the program through its affiliate network and other participating organizations. By participating in Great American Cleanup activities, volunteers work together to transform their local areas into cleaner, safer and healthier communities. In 2003, Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup volunteers eliminated 3,500 illegal dump sites nationwide, picked up 148 million pounds of litter and debris, restored 4,000 playgrounds and recreation areas, and planted more than 1 million trees, flowers and bulbs in just three months. These volunteer efforts added up to 7 million work hours, reducing the need for spending tax dollars on cleanups.

"The Great American Cleanup is a powerful catalyst for changing behaviors and educating people on the importance of taking care of communities through volunteer participation," said G. Raymond Empson, president of Keep America Beautiful, Inc. "We are thrilled to have AT&T Wireless sponsoring our Great American Cleanup. This kind of support is critical to educating everyone -- corporations and citizens -- about their responsibility to keep our country clean and beautiful."
