Canoga Perkins Introduces Hardened Media Converters
Canoga Perkins, a leading provider in the Ethernet service delivery market, today announced a new line of distance extending, high reliability Industrial Hardened Media Converters (IHMCs) for extreme environments. The new line of IHMCs include the model H101 IHNC, which is a 10Base2 to 10BaseT Hardened Ethernet Media Converter, the model HF101 IHMC, which is a 10BaseFL to 10BaseT Hardened Ethernet Media Converter and the model HF1001 IHMC, which is a 100BaseTX to 100BaseFX Hardened Ethernet Media Converter. ¶ The new Hardened Media Converters can convert BNC “ThinNet” and Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) 10 Mbps Ethernet and Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) 100 Mbps Ethernet cooper connections into single mode or multimode fiber optic 10 Mbps Ethernet and 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet connections to greatly increase the distance they are capable of traveling and provide a much higher level of security. The rugged products can withstand extreme temperatures due to their unique design. They use a compact, high strength fully sealed metal enclosure that acts as a giant heat sink. The sealed case actually dissipates heat, drawing it away from the internal electronics so no airflow is required. This means no cooling fan failure or filter replacements to be concerned about. A potentially large cost savings due to the dramatic reduction of costly truck rolls. Patent pending thermal techniques extend the acceptable ambient operating temperature range of the units from -40 degrees C to +75 degrees C which is far superior to standard commercial product offerings. The sealed enclosure also provides immunity to dust, dirt, moisture, smoke, insects and contaminates being pulled in by a fan. ¶ The Hardened Media Converters are designed for industrial, military, outdoor and harsh environments. Some of the leading applications include roadside traffic control stations, cellular phone towers communications, multi-tenant units (MTUs), utility plant and substation control passing, protected outdoor operation, oil field and mining environments, emerging FTTH applications, 802.3ah like Ethernet service delivery, security and surveillance operations, above the ceiling mounting, uncooled or unheated locations such as communications huts and pedestals, dirty manufacturing environments, military field operations including C4I and artillery ranges, plenum applications and Telco Service Provider/Cable MSO applications. Since roadside traffic control stations are a major application area for these products, all of the new Canoga Perkins Hardened Media Converters carry a NEMA TS2 rating for transportation and traffic control equipment such as traffic controllers and variable message signs (VMS). The units were designed to meet or exceed all pertinent Utility, CALTRANS and Traffic Control environmental and temperature specifications. ¶ The H101 Hardened Media Converter is a 10Base2 “ThinNet” to 10BaseT UTP 10 Mbps Ethernet media converter and is compliant with IEEE 802.3 and Ethernet version 1.0 and 2.0. Two sets of status and alarm LEDs are provided on the unit to provide a clear visual indication of health and status from virtually any angle to aid in installation and troubleshooting. ¶ The HF101 Hardened Media Converter is a 10BaseFL fiber optic to 10BaseT UTP 10 Mbps HDX/FDX Ethernet media converter that is compliant with IEEE 802.3 and Ethernet version 1.0 and 2.0. Single mode or multimode fiber optics can be used depending on the application. The HF101 is equipped with a crossover switch on the 10BaseT port eliminating the need for external crossover cables. Two sets of status and alarm LEDs are provided on the unit to provide a clear visual indication of health and status from virtually any angle to aid in installation and troubleshooting. ¶ The “Fast Ethernet” HF1001 Hardened Media Converter is a 100BaseTX STP to 100BaseFX fiber optic HDX/FDX 100 Mbps Ethernet media converter that is compliant with IEEE 802.3u. Single mode or multimode fiber optics can be used depending on the application. The HF1001 is equipped with a crossover switch on the 100BaseTX port eliminating the need for external crossover cables. Two sets of status and alarm LEDs are provided on the unit to provide a clear visual indication of health and status from virtually any angle to aid in installation and troubleshooting. ¶ Jack Buhn, Canoga Perkins President and CEO, stated, “Our new line of hardened media converters expands the applications we can participate in with our customers and builds on our expertise to open new markets we can pursue. Canoga Perkins has always been a pioneer in the Ethernet service delivery market, which is expanding quickly, and this type of product is now being requested for specialized applications. Market analysts are predicting a compound annual growth rate for Ethernet service delivery that is over 35% so you should see Ethernet technology turn up in many new areas. The hardened media converters should also hasten our planned expansion into the Cable MSO market.”¶ The new line of Hardened Media Converters are transparent to the network and require no operating software or scheduled maintenance. They are virtually Plug-n-Play. For added flexibility, the external power supplies provided with the media converters can be ordered with AC or DC power to match virtually any application. The integral DC power terminal blocks are available in 9 VDC, 12 VDC, 24 VDC or -48 VDC versions. The external AC power cube is rated for extended temperatures matching the Hardened Media Converter. A 19 inch rackmount with optional redundant power is available that can house up to ten of the media converters for larger installations. Optional Conformal Coating is available on all of the media converters to provide exceptional humidity protection. The units also come standard with a built in crossover switch on the cooper port so no costly, inconvenient external crossover cables are required simplifying installation. The Hardened Media Converters can extend the distance of an Ethernet LAN up to 40 km permitting the development of new applications. The Canoga Perkins Hardened Media Converters also provide one of the lowest cost entry points into the Ethernet service delivery market.
