Patricia Lareau VP of Product Management at Passfaces Corporation to Present at 2nd Annual TIPPI Workshop

Posted on: Monday, 5 June 2006, 12:00 CDT

Passfaces Corporation today announced that Patricia Lareau, vice president of product management has been selected to speak at the 2nd Annual TIPPI Workshop entitled "Trustworthy Interfaces for Passwords and Personal Information". The workshop will be held on June 19, 2006 at Stanford University and is sponsored by the PORTIA project. You can register for this free event online http://crypto.stanford.edu/TIPPI/register.html

Lareau's topic is entitled "Graphical Passwords with Integrated Trustworthy Interface". The fate of authentication secrets in the hands of users has stymied authentication system designers for decades. The onslaught of consumer-facing, online applications that demand reliable authentication underscores the need to achieve both security and usability in the authentication process. Lareau will demonstrate how the Passfaces(TM) technology challenges the commonly-held assumption that there is an inevitable trade-off between these two objectives. Starting with a consideration of the basic requirements for an "ideal" user secret, the Passfaces system uses a set of pictures of human faces as that secret and brings about significant improvements in both security and usability when compared to text passwords. Additionally, some simple refinements of the Passfaces system provides a highly trustworthy user interface that does not rely on the aptitude, training or attentiveness of the user for its integrity.

The TIPPI Workshop has been sponsored by the PORTIA project-Privacy, Obligations and Rights in Technologies of Information Assessment. PORTIA has recognized that with the increasing use of computers and networks in business, government, recreation, and almost all aspects of daily life has led to a proliferation of online sensitive data, i.e., data that, if used improperly, can harm the data subjects. As a result, concern about the ownership, control, privacy, and accuracy of these data has become a top priority. The project focuses on both the technical challenges of handling sensitive data and the policy and legal issues facing data subjects, data owners, and data users. PORTIA is funded by the National Science Foundation.

Representatives from RSA Security, APWG, Harvard and Stanford Universities, MIT, Microsoft Corp., Google Inc., Bharosa, and Staikos Computing Services will all be presenting. The purpose of the workshop is to facilitate an effective solution to these problems by bringing together the designers of the cryptographic protocols with the implementers of the user interfaces.

Lareau has been active in the Information Security field, in both public and private service, for 20 years. She is currently the Vice President of Product Management for Passfaces Corporation. Previously Patricia was the Managing Director of InfoGard, a NIST/NIAP Accredited Security Lab. Patricia also spent 14 years with the National Security Agency functioning in technical, diplomatic, and executive management positions. She has participated as a technical expert in the development of international banking security standards. Patricia earned her B.S. in Mathematics from Boston College and her M.S. in Mathematics from the University of Maryland.
