Columbia, Md., Telecom Firm Offers Digital Transmission to Media Companies

Posted on: Wednesday, 14 April 2004, 06:00 CDT

Apr. 15--Broadwing Communications Services, a subsidiary of Corvis Corp., said yesterday that it will begin offering digital transmission to media and broadcast companies from an operations center it is opening in Columbia.

The new transmission will allow media companies, some of which are using a less-advanced analog system, to transmit video broadcasts on a digital line, which Broadwing says will produce clearer pictures.

"It's a specially designed system to enhance the capability for media companies who are bringing live content from venues such as sports venues," said Delwin Bothof, vice president and general manager of media services for Dallas-based Broadwing.

The operations center is being built at the Corvis' headquarters in Columbia. Bothof said Broadwing is using Corvis engineers in the initial build-out of the center and didn't know how many employees it would hire once it is up and running.

Corvis bought Broadwing in June as part of its strategy to move away from its original mission as a maker of fiber-optic equipment. Broadwing carries voice, video and Internet traffic on its 19,000-mile optical network.

Sam Greenholtz, a principal with Birmingham-based Telecom Pragmatics, said there is limited audience for the digital transmission because many Internet companies and media companies already have this kind of access, or are working to develop similar systems.

"It could be somewhat significant through an Internet standpoint, but other than that they're pulling at straws," Greenholtz said.
