CARLSBAD, Calif., June 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Online sexual predators are receiving large amounts of media attention. The easy access they have to children's information in an online community such as MySpace has created great concern among parents. But dangers on MySpace extend far beyond sexual predators. Kids are using this social networking site to discuss illicit activities, post inappropriate pictures of themselves, and share personal information about family and friends. Some parents and teachers have gone so far as to suggest that families and schools ban the site. But is there a safe way to use MySpace?
Classroom teachers, Brian and Julie Dixon, want to make sure that parents have the necessary information to make an educated decision regarding the use of MySpace. "Parents are hearing the horrors of the Internet at every turn, but scary stories don't tell them how to protect their kids." shared Julie, "We're here to help parents go from scared to prepared." In response to rising concerns, the Dixons produced a DVD to help parents keep their kids safe online. The Internet and Your Kids: Healthy Habits for Your Online Home DVD includes an entire section devoted to MySpace. Brian takes parents on a tour of the site, shows them what makes it so appealing to kids, and walks parents through specific steps to ensure the safety of their kids. "The majority of my students use MySpace," said Brian, "but their parents don't know where to start to protect their kids. This DVD gives them the knowledge they need." Along with showing parents how to use the built-in safety features available on MySpace, Julie and Brian also share healthy habits for Internet use in the home.
"Protection on the Internet doesn't just come with the click of a few buttons. It's about creating a lifestyle," said Julie. "So much emphasis is put on training kids to keep themselves safe on the Internet, but our goal is to empower their parents." Some parents may want to restrict MySpace completely, but for those who allow it, this DVD is a necessary resource.
So, is there a safe way to use MySpace? The Dixons' answer is yes. But, as Brian says on the DVD, "It depends on how much you are willing to get involved in your child's online life."
