Credence Sapphire S With 6.4G Capability Speeds Testing, Debugging for Sun Microsystems Next-Generation Multi-Threaded SPARC(R) Processors

Posted on: Tuesday, 6 June 2006, 18:00 CDT

MILPITAS, Calif., June 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Credence Systems Corporation , a leading provider of test solutions from design to production for the worldwide semiconductor industry, today announced that Sun Microsystems, Inc. , has purchased the Sapphire(TM) S ATE system with the D-6436 instrument. The D-6436 high-performance, high-channel density functional test instrument is targeted for silicon debug of designs operating up to 6.4 Gbps. Sun will use the system in the development of its next-generation SPARC(R)-based chip multi-threaded (CMT) microprocessors.

Today's advanced devices require high-speed interfaces that cannot be accurately tested using traditional ATE approaches. The D-6436 running on the Sapphire S platform provides a complete, affordably scalable system with the capabilities to debug next-generation processors running advanced bus protocols.

"After a careful evaluation of the ATE systems available, we chose the highly integrated Credence solution," said Sridhar Vajapey, vice president of Technology, Validation and Test at Sun Microsystems, Inc. "The Sapphire S system with the D-6436 instrument provides us with a compelling and highly cost-effective 6.4 Gbps solution, with four times the channels of competitive offerings. We expect our newly installed Sapphire S system will help speed the debug of our industry-leading CMT microprocessors."

With 36 differential channels per instrument, the D-6436 offers the highest channel count density and relative cost-effectiveness of any instrument currently available in its class. Four of its channels can be configured as source synchronous clocks. The instrument has 128 Mbps of full depth acquisition memory and can function in multiple time domains. Each pin can support clock embedded, source synchronous clock forward or tester synchronous modes to emulate native device operating modes.

The D-6436 is a member of Credence's suite of 6.4 Gbps instruments designed to deliver high-speed semiconductor test solutions optimized for both cost and performance. Used in conjunction with the Sapphire S system, this suite offers a complete end-to-end solution from debug, characterization and validation to high volume manufacturing.

"Sun Microsystems has consistently pushed the envelope in developing high performance ICs," said Dave Ranhoff, president and chief executive officer of Credence Systems Corporation. "Sun needed a test platform that could support multiple high-performance protocols in a non-deterministic test environment. The combination of the Sapphire S system and the D-6436 gave them a high- performance solution that met their next-generation device debug requirements."
