Tokyo, April 21 (Jiji Press)--Dell Computer Corp. of the United States captured the largest share of the Japanese market of Intel Architecture servers for the first time ever in January-March, Gartner Japan Ltd. said Wednesday.
Dell Computer's share reached 20.9 pct, slightly surpassing second-ranking NEC Corp.'s 20.1 pct. The result apparently reflects Dell Computer's strong price competitiveness, which is an outcome of the company's direct marketing method.
Hewlett-Packard Co. of the United States came in third with a share of 17.5 pct, and Fujitsu Ltd. ranked fourth with 16.4 pct.
IA servers are personal computers that are used as shared machines in networks and powered by Intel Corp. or Intel-compatible microprocessors.
According to Gartner Japan, a unit of U.S. research firm Gartner Inc., total shipments of IA servers in Japan in January-March grew 12.9 pct from a year earlier to 119,067 units, posting double-digit growth for four consecutive quarters.END
