GarrettCom's Innovative Managed Ethernet Switch Offers Per-Port-Configurable 10Mb-1Gb Support for Telecom Industry

FREMONT, Calif., April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- GarrettCom, Inc., introduced the small-footprint Magnum(TM) 6K16 16-port Managed Fiber Switch for the telecom industry today. The heavy-duty 6K16 is a Carrier-Class version of the company's 6K16V Industrial Ethernet Managed Switch, the only product on the market today available in a 16-port package offering the flexibility of modular, per-port fiber access from 10 Mb to 1 Gb, as well as "big switch" management features including software and hardware alarm support, standards-compatible support for self-healing rings, gigabit backbone configurability, and a wide array of security features such as authentication and encryption. The next-generation switch is easily adaptable to performance and cabling upgrades as users adopt increasingly sophisticated high-bandwidth technologies.
"The configurability and small footprint of the 6K16V was so popular that our telecomm clients requested a version of the product that is designed for central office and other industrial-grade implementations," said Frank Madren, GarrettCom President.
The 6K16 offers heightened security as a part of its access to all the high-end features of GarrettCom's MNS-6K software, including a wide variety of LAN management and security software including console-level authentication and per-port IP-address-level security.
In addition to a hardware alarm that measures power to the main board and sends an alarm if the switch stops, a companion software alarm allows the user to set up an alarm based on any software event. For example, the software alarm can be set up to provide important security monitoring, allowing alarms to be sent should an unauthorized person attempt to access the system, or if a configuration change occurs. With SMTP, the MNS-6K software can trigger an e-mail message when an alarm condition occurs.
The 6K16 switch comes with fan cooling and rack mount hardware, and is NEBS and ETSI rated. Two of the compact 6K16 switches can be mounted side-by-side in a 19" rack for redundancy and hot backup systems in mission-critical applications. Roughly the size of a hardcopy novel (1.75"H x 8.75"W x 10"D), the Magnum 6K16 can be configured with any of the telecommunications industry DC power options, including dual source -48V power. Worldwide AC power is also available.
A mix of port types and speeds provides the highest flexibility in network deployments. The 6K16 Switch offers unique port-type modularity from 10 Mb to 1 Gb, and mixed media ranging from copper through single- and multi-mode fiber with any fiber connector types. Fiber is an important medium in telecommunications applications where it is chosen for noise immunity, distance, and ground-loop avoidance.

GarrettCom products are marketed through a network of resellers, system integrators, and international distributors. List prices for Magnum 6K16 configurations range from $1,300 to $4,000.
