Jun. 13--HAMPTON -- Engineering and architecture students at Hampton University will soon be able to design and simulate buildings, assembly lines and robots using a sophisticated software program worth $58.9 million.
Eric Sheppard, dean of the HU School of Engineering and Technology, found out last week that UGS, a software company based in Plano, Texas, would donate the valuable computer program after Sheppard applied for it earlier this year.
"We wouldn't have even considered buying it," Sheppard said, "because of the cost."
UGS has also donated software to Old Dominion University and Virginia Tech.
Students can design, model and analyze cars of the future, buildings or even robots using the software.
Students will begin using the software in the fall, Sheppard said, which is invaluable because many large companies use similar software and want graduates who know how to use it.
"It's going to give them another tool in their tool belt," he said.
Engineering students can design a car piece by piece and then design the assembly line to put it together using the same software that General Motors uses, Sheppard said.
"We want to make sure our students can take a shot at their dreams here on campus," he said.
"As an educator, one of the most fun things is to provide students with the tools and see what they're going to do with it."
