Jun. 14--TOKYO -- Asahi Glass Co. is considering building a factory to make glass panels for plasma TVs on a former Kansai Electric Power Co. plant site in Osaka, sources close to the matter said Wednesday.
Asahi Glass wants to increase output because of the rising demand for flat-screen TVs, and the electric utility has been trying to figure out how to utilize the 250,000-square-meter site of a power plant that was shut down in 2003, according to the sources.
If the plan goes forward, Asahi Glass will likely lease the land from Kansai Electric, the sources said.
Asahi Glass estimates that demand for plasma TV glass panels will surge 80 percent in 2007 from about 6 million sheets in 2005.
The company earlier said that it will move up its schedule for plant and equipment investment in view of the brisk panel business.
