Casa Connects Cable Operators With Economical Switched Digital Video; Casa's EdgeQAM Optimizes Current Networks for Cable's Switched Digital and On-Demand Video Services

Posted on: Thursday, 22 June 2006, 15:00 CDT

While cable continues to roll out new video services and increase television's personalization, edge device maker Casa Systems, Inc. is empowering operators to radically reduce the cost of enacting their supporting Switched Digital Video strategies. In demonstrations at the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo this week, Casa Systems' EdgeQAM now supports Switched Digital Video operations, providing industry leading performance and density -- up to 64 channels -- for open standards-compliant, dynamic allocation of switched digital video and on-demand in a one rack unit chassis.

Switched Digital Video will allow operators to break through the bandwidth constraints of their current networks to seamlessly provide subscribers with more content through dynamic bandwidth allocation and multicasting according to subscriber demand. Providing a single edge platform for integrated services and applications, including Switched Digital Video, stream intensive on-demand services like network PVR, and high-definition programming, the Casa EdgeQAM is a revolutionary cable edge device which supports both video-over-MPEG today and video-over-DOCSIS tomorrow. Controlled by a Global Session Resource Manager and an SDV server, the C2100's resources can be shared among video services based on real-time network demand, rather than increasing QAM expenditures to meet projected demand.

"Casa is helping operators to unlock the full potential of Switched Digital Video with an unprecedented economical solution," said Jerry Guo, president and CEO, Casa Systems. "The Casa edge platform is designed to enable bandwidth intensive applications with economy, reliability and programmability for investment protection. For the first time, our innovative, open standard compliant QAM sharing solution uniquely enables integrated on-demand and Switched Digital Video networks by providing efficiency and flexibility at the edge. The Casa EdgeQAM supports a wide range of industry protocols, standards and open interfaces, including the Time Warner Cable initiated RPC-based SDV session control protocol today, ensuring optimal video performance in HFC environments and allowing operators to confidently deploy it with other best-of-breed components for open network architectures."

The Casa EdgeQAM also supports new revenue opportunities in targeted advertising. Through advanced digital media processing, operators are now able to splice ad content into video streams at a network's edge, taking advantage of increasingly individualized content delivery.

The EdgeQAM is available today for Switched Digital Video rollouts. Proven in deployments worldwide, a range of operators are already using the solution for robust on-demand services, digital tier advertising insertion and other advanced video processing.

Vastly improving network operations

Casa Systems delivers unmatched cost-performance across a range of bandwidth extensive video network functions including QAM, splicing, grooming, remultiplexing, transrating and statistical multiplexing. Casa's products, including its range of QAMs, its Digital Media Manager "Headend in a Box" and other edge platforms are backed by one of the largest service and support organizations in television, SeaChange International, allowing operators to achieve even lower per-stream and per-channel costs for their on-demand, ad insertion, broadcast channel management and digital simulcast services.

Visit Casa Systems during the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers' Cable-Tec Expo (Denver, through June 23) in SeaChange International's booth 579.
