Popwire Technology Selected as a Key Component to the Digital Asset Management Reference Architecture From Sun Microsystems and WGBH

Posted on: Tuesday, 20 April 2004, 06:00 CDT

At the annual convention of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), Popwire Technology announced that it has been selected to deliver a key component to the Digital Asset Management Reference Architecture provided by Sun Microsystems and public broadcaster WGBH Boston. The Digital Asset Management Reference Architecture is an end-to-end content management system for media and entertainment companies who seek to minimize the costs associated with transitioning legacy platforms into digital assets.

Selected for its industry-leading transcoding capability, Popwire's suite of Media Coding software can create a high quality digital production environment where rich media can be encoded in a single workflow for a variety of distribution networks; Broadcast/IP, Wireless, TV Broadcasting or for efficient digital archiving. Popwire specializes in encoding solutions for customers with a need for large amounts of audio/video volumes to be converted from one media format to another.

"Customers asked for a simple, cost-effective approach to help them manage multiple digital media file formats and handle all possible file formats using non-proprietary storage devices," said Bruce Lyon, Global Manager, Media and Entertainment, Sun Microsystems. "We developed the Digital Asset Management Reference Architecture with broadcast leader WGBH to address a common need among media and entertainment companies in reducing overall production, distribution and storage costs. By adding Popwire´s suite of Media Coding products to this end-to-end capability, we can now provide customers a unique set of tools to help them save money while they evolve their digital assets."

"Popwire is taking software transcoding to a whole new level," said Robert Ekstrom, CEO of Popwire Technology. "We're thrilled to be selected by Sun and WGBH, and we look forward to work closely together to deliver highly reliable and scalable solutions for the broadcast and media industries."

Popwire will be displaying three core products at NAB, booth SL3713; first the Compression Master -- the best desktop media encoder on the market with extensive amount of filters, codecs and output formats. Secondly the Compression Engine -- a server based solution when you have the need for fast throughput, scalability and robustness, all this without compromising the high quality of the content. Thirdly the latest product in the Popwire Technology Media coding suite -- the Popwire Ingestion Engine running on Sun hardware with a very favorable price performance enabling customers to digitize legacy content without locking up their editing station.

"This Digital Asset Management Reference Architecture enables any media enterprise to quickly build and deploy a content management infrastructure using best-in-class components, proven architectural building blocks, and open systems computing platforms for easy integration with existing IT and broadcast infrastructures," said Ravi Pendekanti, Senior Director of Reference Architectures and Customer Ready Systems programs at Sun Microsystems. "Sun Reference Architectures have already been proven to help customers reduce the total cost of ownership and speed solution deployment -- without the risk of deploying untested and unproven technologies."
