Proofpoint Introduces Next Generation Proofpoint Protection Server and Proofpoint P-Series Appliance, the Most Effective Spam Detection and Message Protection Platform

Posted on: Tuesday, 27 April 2004, 06:00 CDT

LONDON (Booth #735, Infosecurity Europe 2004), April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Proofpoint Inc., the leader in large enterprise comprehensive message protection solutions, today announced the availability of a new version of its award-winning message protection platform. Proofpoint Protection Server(TM) 2.1, available immediately, builds on the enhanced message protection, advanced content filtering, zero administration overhead and easy customization features of Proofpoint Protection Server 2.0 making Proofpoint the ideal anti-spam, anti-virus and email content compliance solution for even the most demanding enterprises.

Proofpoint Protection Server is the only enterprise message protection solution based on Proofpoint MLX(TM) -- an advanced machine-learning technology that delivers adaptive protection to automatically defend organizations against emerging types of message-borne threats. It examines more than 50,000 attributes to identify and eliminate spam. This same technology is also available in a hardened, secure, zero-administration solution, the Proofpoint P-Series Appliance. The new features are available for both the software and appliance products.

"We are committed to ensuring the long-term success and satisfaction of our customers by keeping pace with the rapidly evolving message protection requirements of today's enterprise," said Gary Steele, CEO of Proofpoint. "Proofpoint Protection Server 2.1 adds a wide variety of customer-requested enhancements and powerful new features that provide outstanding value and future-proof these enterprises against new types of threats."

Proofpoint Protection Server 2.1 is designed for the unique needs of large enterprises with one thousand or more email inboxes, and offers the most accurate spam detection and the most comprehensive message protection platform. New features include:

Support for Complex Inbound and Outbound Email Filtering Rules:

Proofpoint Protection Server lets system administrators easily create complex rules for filtering both inbound and outbound email using Boolean operators. A unique graphical user interface makes it easy to create, modify and administer these rules for the ultimate in filtering flexibility. Filtered messages can be quarantined, rerouted, flagged for review or deleted as appropriate. In addition, administrators can now add text footers -- such as corporate disclaimers or confidentiality messages -- to outgoing messages based on these filtering rules.

New Anti-Virus Capabilities:

Through a new technology partnership with European anti-virus leader F-Secure (announced in a separate press release today), Proofpoint Protection Server 2.1 is available with the integrated functionality of F-Secure's robust, Linux-based gateway anti-virus solution. Proofpoint customers can choose between a variety of best-of-breed anti-virus solutions including F-Secure and Network Associates'(R) McAfee(R) Security.

Web-based Administration Features:

In addition to the convenient email-based end user administration features, which make it easy for end-users to manage their own safe/blocklists and email quarantines, version 2.1 adds an easy-to-use web-based interface. With this enhancement, Proofpoint Protection Server now supports virtually any email client (including Microsoft Outlook Web Access) making the product ideal for enterprises that rely heavily on web-based email interfaces. Additionally, digest filtering features of version 2.1 give system administrators enhanced control over the frequency, content and "look and feel" of digest messages.

Enhanced Support for Secure and Encrypted Messaging:

Proofpoint Protection Server 2.1 includes the ability to route messages to secure messaging systems such as Sigaba Secure Messaging for encryption and secure transmission of sensitive information. For example, an organization in the healthcare sector can easily define a policy that inspects outbound email messages, determines whether or not they contain information subject to HIPAA regulations and, if so, properly encrypt them so as to ensure regulatory compliance.

Advanced Reporting Features:

Enhancements to Proofpoint Protection Server's reporting dashboard -- which offers more than 35 reports for real-time analysis -- make it easier for system administrators to display and share easy-to-understand, "360 degree" information about the state of their companies' messaging infrastructures including message volume, spam and virus attack trends, policy violations and content analysis trends.

Enhanced Directory Server Support with GUI Command Console:

Version 2.1 offers enhanced LDAP, Microsoft Active Directory and Lotus Domino Directory support including a new graphical user interface for directory server integration.

Proofpoint P-Series Appliance Enhancements:

All of the new Proofpoint Protection Server 2.1 features described previously are also available in the Proofpoint P-Series Appliance. The appliance has been further enhanced with administration features and new functionality that make it easier to integrate within complex customer environments, including the ability to use the appliance for outbound email filtering.

Platforms, Pricing and Availability

Proofpoint Protection Server 2.1 is available immediately and runs on Solaris(TM) or Linux operating systems. Annual pricing ranges from $2 to $20 (depending on the number of email inboxes) per user, including upgrades and regular anti-spam rule updates. The updated software is available free of charge to existing Proofpoint customers. Pricing of the Proofpoint P-Series Appliance begins at $3,300 for the hardware plus annual software fees.
