Caspian Raises the Bar for Backbone Quality and Guaranteeing Premium Internet Services; SK Telecom Deploys 10 Gbps Caspian Backbone Featuring Flow-State QoS for Enabling Korean Multimedia E-Gov Services

Posted on: Monday, 26 June 2006, 09:00 CDT

Caspian, the leading provider of multimedia traffic management solutions for IP and multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) networks, today announced the availability of Flow-State QoS technology for 10 Gbps Ethernet, setting a new industry benchmark for provisioning Premium Internet services. Premium service provisioning has become the preferred practice for offering service level guarantees and delivering superior quality of service for real-time multimedia applications, including IPTV, video on demand, high-definition videoconferencing and online gaming. With Caspian Media Controllers providing Flow-State QoS at 10 Gbps data rates, network operators now have the means to pursue innovative, nondiscriminatory business models with tiered service levels for both consumers and providers of multimedia Internet content. Premium provisioning also enables Internet service and content providers to monetize their offerings in tiers or with options for personalization.

To implement premium multimedia services on an extensive e-Gov network in South Korea, SK Telecom is deploying a 10 Gbps MPLS mesh backbone designed exclusively with Caspian Media Controllers. By deploying Caspian Media Controllers that perform both Flow-State QoS and basic routing, SK Telecom is able to provision a wide range of e-Gov services that include high-quality VoIP, videoconferencing and other real-time multimedia applications, along with mission-critical virtual private networks and Internet access for government agencies and citizens alike.

The Caspian Media Controllers' flow-state traffic management capabilities enable SK Telecom to deliver exceptional quality of service to its subscribers at broadband data rates without the cost and complexity involved in over-engineering the network. Leveraging flow-state technology, SK Telecom now has the means to provide always-on services with the speed, responsiveness and premium quality required to accommodate bandwidth-intensive multimedia applications -- all at a fraction of the cost of alternative 10 Gbps IP solutions.

"The market demand for premium provisioning is readily apparent in today's triple-play offerings that support data, voice over IP and IPTV, and this is precisely why every next-generation network architecture endeavors to satisfy this need," commented Dave Passmore, research director at the Burton Group. "Caspian's 'flow-aware' solution can fulfill this critical next-generation need in an existing IP or MPLS network infrastructure. And by making the service provisioning nondiscriminatory, Caspian addresses the concerns of Net neutrality advocates and enables network operators to move aggressively with implementation plans."

Flow-State QoS Technology

Caspian's patented Flow-State QoS technology is designed to overcome the limitations of "best effort" bandwidth management in the multimedia Internet. The Flow-State QoS technology identifies all unique IP traffic flows, without requiring invasive deep packet inspection. It then applies the fair use policies that dynamically deliver the QoS, bandwidth and priority required by each traffic flow. Custom-designed ASICs enable each 10-Gbps interface to process and retain state information for up to six million separate flows and thousands of policies simultaneously. Congestion is also mitigated proactively using Call Admission Control for VoIP and video traffic. Equipped with Flow-State QoS, Caspian Media Controllers deployed in the aggregation, backbone or peering points of existing IP or MPLS networks are able to provide deterministic QoS, zero-packet loss and a 2-3 times improvement in overall bandwidth utilization.

"As the Internet evolves from providing basic data connectivity to delivering quality multimedia services, network operators need a cost-effective migration strategy," said Caspian President and CEO Brad Wurtz. "The Media Controller with Flow-State QoS affords a dual strategy for provisioning Premium Internet services cost-effectively in either existing routed and switched infrastructures, or in deployments that expand or buildout new networks to serve additional markets."
