Telcordia Technologies (www.telcordia.com) today announced that Dr. Marek E. Rusinkiewicz, Vice President and General Manager of the company's Information and Computer Sciences Research Laboratory, has been appointed to the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) Networking and Information Technology Technical Advisory Group. This high-profile appointment acknowledges Telcordia's long history as a leading innovator of communications technologies. Telcordia employees have generated more than 800 patents, leading to breakthroughs in technologies such as ADSL, ATM, Frame Relay and SONET.
President George W. Bush created PCAST in 2001 as a way to receive advice from the private sector and academic community on technology, scientific research priorities, and math and science education. PCAST builds on a tradition of science and technology advisory panels that began during the Eisenhower and Truman administrations. Under the current Administration, PCAST has provided advice on issues such as nanotechnology, broadband, IT competitiveness, federal R&D investment, cloning and energy.
The Networking and Information Technology Technical Advisory Group advises PCAST's members, who currently include leading executives and innovators such as Hector de Jesus Ruiz, Chairman and CEO of Advanced Micro Devices, Duane Ackerman, Chairman and CEO of BellSouth, Robert Brown, President of Boston University, and Michael Dell, Chairman of Dell.
"PCAST's 36 members are a who's who of academics and enterprise, and we're thrilled that Marek will be advising this elite group," said Dan Carroll, CEO of Telcordia. "Marek's appointment is the latest example of the national recognition for Telcordia's innovation and insight."
As Vice President and General Manager of the Computer and Information Sciences Laboratory at Telcordia, Dr. Rusinkiewicz is responsible for planning and supervising R&D work funded by internal IRD programs, government programs and external commercial projects. His expertise includes database systems, workflow technologies, transaction management, agent-based information systems, distributed computing systems and knowledge-based systems.
"Being appointed to PCAST's Networking and Information Technology Technical Advisory Group is a great honor," Dr. Rusinkiewicz said. "I look forward to helping the President and his advisors understand and assess the technology and communications issues that will shape our country for decades to come."
Dr. Rusinkiewicz joined Telcordia's Information and Computer Sciences Research Laboratory in 2001 after serving as Chief Scientist and Director of the company's Austin Research Center, which he helped create. At the center, Dr. Rusinkiewicz participated in research and technology transfer projects in the areas of information integration and process management, with applications in advanced telecommunication systems. Before joining Telcordia, Dr. Rusinkiewicz was Vice President for Information Technology Research at the Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation, the leading U.S. research consortium carrying out industry-sponsored, pre-competitive research. Dr. Rusinkiewicz also had academic appointments at the University of Houston, the University of Michigan, the University of Glasgow and the University of Warsaw.
Dr. Rusinkiewicz's professional activities include serving on the Member Advisory Board of the World Wide Web Consortium and as the Editor-in-Chief of the World Wide Web Journal.
