SafeNet Security Chips Are Now RoHS Compliant; Compliance With EU Directive in Time for July 1 Deadline Ensures Environmentally Friendly Security Solutions for Networking OEMs

Posted on: Wednesday, 28 June 2006, 12:00 CDT

SafeNet, Inc. (NASDAQ:SFNT), setting the standard for information security, today announced that its SafeXcel security semiconductor products for networking OEMs are free of hazardous materials and meet compliance standards defined by the Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) European Union (EU) Directive 2002/95/EG. Effective July 1, 2006, electronic equipment vendors must comply with RoHS in order to manufacture and sell networking equipment within the EU.

The RoHS directive will ban the sale of new electronic equipment in the European Union that contains more than the specified levels of hazardous materials, including lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBB, and PBDE.

"SafeNet is a leader in providing security products that comply with applicable industry standards," said Henk Pruim, vice president and general manager of SafeNet's OEM Networking Division. "With RoHS compliant security products, SafeNet OEM customers can integrate robust security systems that not only provide the best value for high-performance standards-based security systems but furthermore ensure compliance with the European RoHS directive to offer environmentally responsible products."

Other countries are adopting legislation modeled after RoHS, including China's Regulation for Pollution Control of Electronic Products (RPCEP) and Japan's environmental procurement practices (JPSSI). Taiwan, Korea, Canada and Australia are initiating country-specific versions of the RoHS directive. The state of California has adopted the Electronic Waste Recycling Act, scheduled to take effect in 2007, and 20 other US states have bills pending for RoHS-like regulations.
