Sun Marks a Decade of Commitment to Communities During Its Tenth Annual Worldwide Volunteer Week

SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Thousands of employees of Sun Microsystems, Inc. will join their families and friends in local community volunteer efforts around the globe next week during the company's Worldwide Volunteer Week 2004.

From California to Canada, Scotland to Singapore, teams of Sun volunteers will partner with many nonprofit organizations to support programs that address homelessness and support services for low-income families, the elderly, youth education and career development. Since 1995, Sun volunteers have contributed more than 200,000 hours of their time to improve the communities where they live and work, an average of 22,222 hours per year. Based on Independent Sector's calculations of value per volunteer hour over the last nine years, Sun employees have donated more than $3,000,000 to support community volunteer efforts since 1995.*
"Sun Microsystems has been a regular volunteer group with Peninsula Habitat for Humanity for more than a decade. Always friendly and ready to serve, the Sun volunteers have dedicated more than 3,000 hours on our various construction sites," said Don Varney, volunteer services manager for the Peninsula Habitat for Humanity. "Sun's 'can do' attitude of supplying volunteer labor and funding to purchase building materials is not only a great combination, but also a necessary one for Peninsula Habitat to continue to build affordable, ownership housing locally."
Coordinated by Sun's Global Community Development Department, employees plan to take part in more than 115 projects during Worldwide Volunteer Week, which runs from April 17 - 25. For example, more than 100 volunteers will participate in Operation USO Care Package in Fort Meade, Maryland on the first day of Worldwide Volunteer Week with the goal of creating more than 5,000 care packages for U.S. troops stationed in Iraq. Sun's volunteer projects coincide with National Volunteer Week, a 31-year tradition organized by the Points of Lights Foundation to promote volunteerism across the U.S. Sun's environmental preservation and cleanup activities, ranging from ecological restoration and tree planting to beach cleanups, are also timed to coincide with internationally recognized Earth Day activities on April 22, 2004.

Worldwide Volunteer Week illustrates Sun's continued commitment to community involvement. Last year alone, more than 2,300 Sun employees volunteered across the globe.
