The City of Pomona and Technology Partners Give Residents a Post-Holiday Gift; Free WiFi Weekend To Provide Community a Free Sample of Wireless Internet
Posted on: Wednesday, 5 July 2006, 15:00 CDT
From July 7th to July 9th the City of Pomona along with Cheetah Wireless Technologies, Inc., Affiliated Computer Services (ACS), Tropos Networks, Inc. and Nomadix will provide free wireless network access to anyone with a WiFi card, offer free WiFi installation and Tech Support to those with laptops, give demonstrations, as well as distribute free WiFi prepaid service cards as part of the City of Pomona's WiFi Weekend beginning on Friday, July 7th.
To help celebrate the arrival of the City of Pomona's Wireless Network the city and its technology partners are making WiFi free to everyone over the July 7th to 9th weekend, as well as staging a one-day event, "WiFi Freedom Day," to help educate and further spur the adoption and use of the City of Pomona's WiFi Network.
Pomona, considered by some to have been previously affected by the "Digital Divide," has taken steps to help its citizens receive easier access to the Internet through the downtown WiFi cloud that launched in May of this year. As a result of these efforts by the City of Pomona, ACS, and Cheetah Wireless, residents are now able to receive the benefit of access to the Internet without wires.
"We would like the business community, residents, students, and Metro Link commuters of Pomona to see how easy it is to connect to the city's new wireless network and to experience the opportunity of surfing the web, checking e-mail, chatting with friends and all the other uses the Internet provides away from their homes and offices," said Mitch Gonzalez, Founder and President of Cheetah Wireless. "We know once they experience the Internet without wires they will really want to use it more often."
Two special events kick off the Free-WiFi Weekend. Friday, July 7th starting at 7 am at the Downtown Pomona Metro Link Station and continuing at the Mission Promenade, 101 Mission Boulevard (inside the courtyard) from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm. Representatives of the City of Pomona, Cheetah Wireless and ACS will be on hand for one-on-one demonstrations of WiFi access, how to set up WiFi on a computer, and how to connect a PDA (personal digital assistant) on the City of Pomona's Wireless Network. -- Metro Link Downtown Station 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. -- WiFi Demos provided by Cheetah Wireless -- Free WiFi Tech Support for those who bring their laptops -- Free "I was freed in Pomona" T-Shirts -- Free Hi-Speed Wireless Pre-paid service cards -- Free breakfast pastries -- Mission Promenade, 101 Mission Blvd. (Inside courtyard) 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. -- WiFi Demos provided by Cheetah Wireless -- Free WiFi Tech Support for those who bring their laptops -- Free "I was freed in Pomona" T-Shirts -- Free Hi-Speed Wireless Pre-paid service cards -- Free Hoagie sandwiches
