Indian company begins to lay fiber cable to Singapore

NEW DELHI, May 15 (Xinhua) -- An Indian company began the process of laying a 3,175 kilometers long undersea Fiber Optic Cable (FOC) Saturday between the southern coastal city of Chennai and Singapore via Andaman Islands.

The cable, with a 5.12 terabit capacity of international bandwidth, would enable the company to offer the highest level of service at reasonable tariff to customers, the Press Trust of India quoted Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL),s Director of operations N Srinath as saying.

"Our endeavor is to commence commercial operations of the cable by the fourth quarter of 2004, to be able to enhance the robustness, uptime and reliability of our end-to-end connectivity, offering to our corporate and broadband customer base at the earliest," he said.

"VSNL, India's largest international telecommunications and Internet service provider, has one of the largest international bandwidths in the country on multiple satellite and submarine cable systems," he said.

Last month, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had recommended that the always-on broadband connection should be offered at a price of around 4 to 9 US dollars per month against 33 US dollars per month.

India currently has 6 million Internet users and 10 million Personal Computers.

TRAI reckons there will be 20 million broadband users by 2007 if the government and broadband service providers accept the recommendations.
