NEC Wins Order for Undersea Optical-Fiber Cable System

May 14–TOKYO — NEC Corp. said Friday it has won an order for an undersea optical fiber cable system linking Indonesia and Malaysia from PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia Tbk. and Telekom Malaysia Bhd. for an undisclosed sum.

The 160-kilometer cable will connect Dumai, an east-coast port on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, and the Malaysian port city of Melaka and have an initial capacity of 20 gigabits per second.

It can be upgraded to 320 gigabits per second, which is capable of accommodating 3.84 million telephone circuits, NEC said.

NEC plans to complete the project to install the cable system by the end of 2004.

PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia, known as PT Telkom, and Telekom Malaysia are state-owned entities and the largest telecommunication operators in their respective countries.

The project is designed to meet growing demand for Internet and data communications services in the region, NEC said.
