Mercury Computer Systems to Provide Communications Platform for Commercial Ground-Based Satellite Beamforming Application

Posted on: Thursday, 20 July 2006, 15:00 CDT

CHELMSFORD, Mass., July 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Mercury Computer Systems, Inc. announced it has been awarded an $8.6 million contract to provide a communications platform for a commercial ground-based satellite beamforming application.

"We are leveraging our investments and success in the Ensemble(TM) AdvancedTCA(R)-based platform and FPGA computation technologies, to deliver a highly configurable solution," said Mark Skalabrin, Vice President and General Manager of the Advanced Solutions business at Mercury. "Mercury's proven capability to solve the hardest computing problems was critical to our selection for this innovative application."

The Mercury system will provide the signal processing resources and high-speed communications infrastructure to support the massive computing requirements for deployment of Ancillary Terrestrial Component (ATC) services. Authorized by the Federal Communications Commission, ATC services enable satellites to work together with terrestrial communications systems to provide improved coverage and capacity for voice and data communications.

The Mercury system is designed to include multiple carrier-grade field-programmable gate array, or FPGA-based compute blades in an AdvancedTCA chassis. In its full configuration, the system will interconnect more than 100 latest generation FPGAs with one-half terabit of streaming I/O, to deliver one of the highest performing signal processing platforms in existence.

Delivery of the initial development systems is planned for August 2006. About Mercury Computer Systems, Inc.
