Research and Markets: Telecommunications Services in Hong Kong

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com) has announced the addition of Telecommunications Services in Hong Kong: A Market Analysis to their offering.
Telecommunications are the lifeblood of Hong Kong in more ways than one. Hong Kong's position as a business capital of global proportions - with the HKSE, numerous major corporations and a major port - means communications are crucial. But the telecoms market is also driven by millions of individuals who require landlines, IDD services and, in density figures that are among the highest in the world, mobile communications.
The 1990s have seen the gradual liberalisation of the Hong Kong telecoms market. This is a process that has quickened since the hand back to China and has been encouraged by Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa, who has publicly pledged himself to his vision of Hong Kong as a regional hub for electronic commerce.
The other major factor affecting Hong Kong's telecoms market is that the SAR is now the primary window, or gateway, into the Mainland Chinese market. So far, the Chinese remain closed largely to outsiders but with the break-up of China Telecom, the state monopoly, and China's eventual entry into the WTO, an increasing number of global telecoms companies are establishing bridgeheads and partnerships in Hong Kong.
In 2001, the market for telecoms in Hong Kong was open more to international players and was ferociously competitive than ever before. Alongside the long-term telecoms company of the SAR - HK Telecom - are companies such as Hutchison Whampoa, New World Development and Wharf. Not for nothing have some regional analysts dubbed telecoms Hong Kong's new property market. At a time of consumer recession and economic gloom in Hong Kong, telecoms have been a bright spot for both local and international investors. There appears to be little sign of that brightness fading in the immediate future.
This report focuses on the provision of telecoms services in Hong Kong SAR. The following sectors are covered:
- Fixed telecommunications network services (FTNS)
- International Direct Dialling (IDD)
- Mobile Telecommunications
This report also covers relevant legislation, marketing, promotional and advertising strategies, domestic and foreign telecoms providers as well as forecasts to 2004.
