Shuttle Chooses Western Digital Hard Drives for Use In Its Small Form Factor Computers

Posted on: Monday, 17 May 2004, 06:00 CDT

CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif., May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Shuttle Computer Group, Inc., the world's leading designer and manufacturer of small form factor (SFF) computers, has chosen two series of Western Digital hard drives for use in its award-winning XPC line of products. The hard drives are: WD Raptor, designed for enterprise applications, and WD Caviar SE, for desktop use. Western Digital is a storage industry pioneer and one of its long-time leaders.

"The Shuttle XPC is one of the world's most popular PC's for media center and content creation," said Cameron Rogers, Director of Marketing for Shuttle. "Western Digital drives give XPC owners the capacity, performance, and reliability they need for demanding content and applications. We are pleased to be associated with the quality and performance the Western Digital brand represents."

WD Raptor is the only enterprise-class mechanical platform with a Serial ATA interface that meets all the reliability and performance demands of an enterprise environment at less cost than traditional SCSI drives. It is the world's first 10,000-RPM Serial ATA drive and has an average data seek as fast as 4.5 ms and is specially engineered for around-the-clock operation. In addition to enterprise applications, WD Raptor is appropriate for other high duty cycle requirements such as gaming and media centers. Shuttle offers its XPC systems equipped with WD Raptor 74 GB capacity drives.

Spinning at 7,200 RPM, WD Caviar SE drives offer the performance necessary for today's desktop applications. Its 8 MB buffer increases performance levels beyond that of standard 2 MB buffer EIDE hard drives. XPC equipped with WD Caviar SE range in capacity from 80 to 250 GB.

"Since their introduction, WD Raptor and WD Caviar drives have been embraced by PC enthusiasts and the gaming communities," commented Richard E. Rutledge, vice president of marketing for Western Digital. "Western Digital's family of hard drives are a natural complement to Shuttle's innovative small form factor computers and we are proud to be working with Shuttle to further serve these markets."

Products are available either through Shuttle's on-line store at http://www.us.shuttle.com/systems or from major consumer electronics, PC, and mass merchant retail outlets nationwide. Units are expected to retail in the $799 to $3000 range. Shuttle XPC's are also available as a barebones kit, allowing end users to custom build their own PC.

Shuttle XPC systems weigh approximately 12 pounds and have a footprint roughly the size of a shoe box -- 11.7"x8.9"x7.2". Each includes the company's patented integrated cooling engine (ICE), which provides efficient cooling for high-speed processors without the fan noise associated with high-end PCs.
