FLASHWAVE 4100 and FLASHWAVE 4500 MSPPs Enable Rapid and Cost-Effective Ethernet Services across Embedded SONET Network
Fujitsu Network Communications Inc., a leading supplier of IT and networking solutions, today announced that TelCove is activating a new metro and intercity Ethernet service with the FLASHWAVE(R) 4000 Multi-Service Provisioning Platforms (MSPPs) as a key transport component. TelCove's Metropolitan Ethernet Transport service leverages their highly reliable SONET network to reach more customers and provide 10/100Base-TX and Gigabit Ethernet services across their entire network. The advanced Ethernet over SONET (EoS) capabilities of the FLASHWAVE 4000 MSPPs allow TelCove to utilize existing network capacity and provide these advanced services without requiring wholesale changes to their embedded network or existing operating procedures.
TelCove's Metropolitan Ethernet Transport service can support disaster recovery through remote file back up and database replication. The service is also appealing to enterprises that use or need to share large CAD files or high-resolution images for remote analysis. Other applications include file sharing, video transport, cinematography or high speed Internet access.
Nationwide deployment of the FLASHWAVE 4500 core transport system and FLASHWAVE 4100 optical access platform to support these new data applications has already begun. These MSPPs were selected because they satisfy TelCove's need for high capacity, scalable and cost-effective Ethernet solutions that support bandwidth delivery of up to 1,000 Mbps per subscriber.
"TelCove has adopted a best-in-class approach for our new Ethernet service and the Fujitsu FLASHWAVE platforms provide the low latency and non-proprietary EoS solution we require," said Craig Drinkhall, senior vice president of product development and engineering. "TelCove and Fujitsu have enjoyed a strong relationship with the deployment of a large number of FLM Add/Drop Multiplexers (ADMs) and next-generation FLASHWAVE network elements. The familiarity that our installers have with Fujitsu products has translated into faster time-to-market for new Ethernet services to our customers."
TelCove's SONET infrastructure, which already includes the FLASHWAVE 4300 MSPP, connects over 3,500 buildings and many thousands of companies throughout its 50 markets. By adding the FLASHWAVE 4100 optical access platform to customer premises and the FLASHWAVE 4500 core transport platform to central offices, TelCove can rapidly provision 10/100Base-TX and Gigabit Ethernet services across their entire network.
Ethernet packets are transported inside standard SONET frames to maintain full compatibility with any standards-based network element, including existing ADMs that do not typically support Ethernet interfaces. Since the FLASHWAVE 4000 platforms support provisioning of Ethernet from 1.5 Mbps to 1 Gbps in small increments, TelCove created a menu of options with their new Ethernet service to allow customers numerous bandwidth choices.
"By making Ethernet service provisioning similar to the way DS1 and DS3 services are currently deployed, Fujitsu is enabling new service opportunities for carriers without forcing them to incur a large learning curve or switching cost penalty," said George Chase, group president and chief operating officer of Fujitsu Network Communications. "TelCove's deployment of the FLASHWAVE MSPPs for their robust, nationwide Ethernet service validates the scalability, cost effectiveness and ease of provisioning of our EoS solution."
