Time Warner Telecom Delivers Textbook Reliability of Ethernet Internet Service to Wake County Public Schools

Posted on: Monday, 10 May 2004, 06:00 CDT

RALEIGH, N.C., May 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Time Warner Telecom , a leading provider of managed voice and data networking solutions for businesses in North Carolina and 21 other states, today announced the successful installation of Ethernet Internet services to the Wake County Public School System in Raleigh. Superior reliability and service, along with competitive pricing, were among the reasons Wake County Schools awarded the three year contract to Time Warner Telecom.

"With over 100,000 students and employees in our County public schools, we get more than three million Web requests per hour," said Vass Johnson, director of network systems for the Wake County Public School System. "With that kind of usage, we needed much higher reliability from our Internet provider. Time Warner Telecom's service has performed very well to date and the company has been a pleasure to work with. I like the fact that scaling additional bandwidth is about as easy as placing a call to request more capacity."

"Our previous provider had availability issues, consistently going down about one hour a month," added Johnson. "We've had zero down time with Time Warner Telecom so far, which is what I expected given the strong recommendations other customers we spoke with gave us."

The Wake County Public School System is using Time Warner Telecom's 50 Mbps Ethernet Internet service to provide Internet access to students, faculty and administrators at 126 school locations. Content is filtered at the school district's data center located in the central administration building in Raleigh then re-routed back to the schools.

"School districts like Wake County rely on the Internet heavily to support their teaching mission," said Scott Larsen, vice president and general manager for Time Warner Telecom in Raleigh. "We find that our high network reliability, ease of scalability and competitive pricing dovetails nicely with the needs of our educational customers. We were also able to demonstrate that our maintenance schedules wouldn't interfere with their daily operations, something their former provider failed to achieve."
