L.A. City Council Responds to Community Coalition, Approves $1 Billion City Housing Bond for November Ballot

Posted on: Wednesday, 26 July 2006, 21:00 CDT

LOS ANGELES, July 26 /PRNewswire/ -- A unanimous vote of the Los Angeles City Council Wednesday placed a $1 billion affordable housing bond on the city's November 7, 2006 general election ballot. The Council's action came in response to a yearlong organizing effort led by a broad coalition of civic leaders, housing advocates and providers, homeowners, renters, and business and labor leaders.

Under the leadership of the community-based coalition Homes For LA Families, the bond measure was carefully drafted to include provisions to help solve the severe housing crisis in the City, including addressing the needs of the homeless, low-income renters and low and moderate-income first-time homebuyers. The measure also includes strong provisions for independent oversight and public audits.

Coalition co-chair G. Allan Kingston, President and CEO of Century Housing, praised the Council's action. "We are grateful to our elected leaders for taking this important step to address the housing crisis in Los Angeles," he said. "The Homes for L.A. Families Campaign will work diligently to ensure that voters fully understand the economic and social benefits this bond will bring to all Angelenos. We also thank Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa for his leadership and commitment to this effort," said Kingston.

Other coalition members praised the bond, and stressed the need for homes affordable by the workforce.

"One LA supports this important first step towards making affordable housing a reality in Los Angeles," said Reverend Samuel Chu of Immanuel Presbyterian Church. One LA is an umbrella organization that draws members from more than 100 local churches, community groups and schools.

Roy San Filippo, a member of the Painters and Allied Trades District Council 36, said, "As a worker, resident, and renter in the City of Los Angeles, I believe it is crucial that the people who work in this city, the people who build this city and provide services here can afford to live in Los Angeles."

The coalition will wage an extensive campaign to educate voters and secure passage of the bond. Polls conducted by the coalition already show enough support to pass the measure, with the required two-thirds vote.
